hey everyone,

now i know it''s hard to make a blanket statement, but can anyone make a judgement on Asschers available from Blue Nile? i have read that the Asscher is a cut that, more than most others, really needs to be seen to judge beauty and overall quality, unlike other cuts where stats alone might get you something great.

so the reason that i''m asking is that i pointed my BF to a 1.5 carat asscher with great stats, but they only show a stock photo so i couldn''t see what it really looks like. this scares me because he doesn''t know a ton about diamonds and might have just taken my suggestion and purchased this one without comparing it to other stones available that might be more beautiful in person.

do you think there is anything i can do about this now?? i have no idea whether he''s purchased a stone yet...

You really need an actual photo of the asscher. There maybe darkness in the steps and you won't know it unless you have a picture. The best thing to do is find a vendor who has pictures and post them or at least the link to the picture so we can help find a great asscher. Welcome to PS

skippy-

so if he already bought it, then clearly i have no options. but if he didn''t, then what can i do-- send him a link to something written by strmdr, the "asscher master", and hope he reads it and absorbs enough information to make a good choice?

will have to look for sites with actual photos...

well Blue Nile has a pretty good 30 day return policy. how long ago did you talk about this with him and when do you suspect he might have purchased it? I am guessing you don't see it on the blue nile site anymore--any idea of when it was taken off the site?

I returned one diamond to them, they paid return shipping and I had no problems. Just be careful to follow ALL the instructions very carefully, including the bit about not allowing blue Nile on the label. They had a misprint on my label and actually had "blue nile" on it that I almost didn't see, but I called one last time and the guy told me about it and said to cut it off or it wouldn't be accepted (very small, and they printed it...ugh). So just follow all the rules very carefully one at a time, and he better check everything several times.

But I am going to be honest with you, I was a big fan of the whole surprise bit. But if my fiance had wanted something in particular and had very high standards and it was highly subjective to personal taste--I would tell her she better speak up. Surprise is great, but years and years of dissatisfaction just isn't worth it and there are other ways to work it out.

For instance if he buys from somewhere with an upgrade policy. Then you can level with the man. Tell him that you do have certain dreams and you want to have a hand in picking it. So work with him and pick it out, or give him a couple of options you would be particularly happy with (maybe the cheapest one being the one you really want, and the more expensive options being higher color and clarity than you would want, but that look just as good and you would be happy to have, only don't need, the higher quality, and let him know you like the cheapest one the most and explain why so he will be happy to buy it for you later but you can't be 100% sure).

then tell him, if things go south, well, he has an upgrade policy and he will meet a new woman in the future, he can just buy a new ring and send that one back

not that that is an option mind you, but just to help create the illusion of possibility. then let him surprise you on his own.

Anyway, my point is, as a male, I would be pissed off if my fiance kept her mouth shut and had very particular standards, only to be unhappy later. So I say talk to the man!

Hmmmmmm..........

Well...I may have just seen my first AGS0.

If I did, and if they''re here, you can tell him to look for them.

But, I''m not sure.

Do you think BN is taking after WF, and only offering stars?

Check this one out...

It''s 1.5, too!

Hum, if they are going to switch to stars they might want to reverse there grading scale, and perhaps make it 1-11

0 stars won''t look too impressive, and everybody is always going to have to wonder if some white out might have been involved.

Ok, you be Hillel, and AGS will be Shamai...and we''ll re-enact diamond grading as lighting the candles for Hanukah!

if thats a 0 and I dont think it is then the AGS grade is worse than I feared.

As far as the orginal post, they dont provide enough info.
If he hasnt bought yet point him in the direction of Jon at www.goodoldgold.com and have them bring some in.

are they only online, or do they have an actual shop? and if so where are they located?

it frustrates me that i am 99% sure he has not done his best to educate himself on this matter. he likely thinks this stone can be assessed like any other cut, which is not exactly true. it''s kind of like i won''t be disappointed if i ONLY see the one i get, but if i happen to compare it to another i see posted here or elsewhere, i might wonder if he could have gotten something better, a better cut i mean.

On a purchase this important, I would just point blank ask him (nicely) if he purchased it and explain that you have done some research and what to make sure he gets the most for his money.

so this one sounds good, but again there is no actual photo.

i am in jersey, but he is in new york, so that might not be such a far trip for him.

because for example this one seems great, but until i lay eyes on it, i just can''t tell....
