Long time lurker, first time poster here. I am weighing a decision on an asscher cut diamond and would like some expert help....

Here are the Specs

GIA Certified Stone: Asscher Cut Stone

1.02 Carats
H color
Measurements: 5.82-5.79x3.75
Depth: 69%
Table: 63%
Girdle: slightly thick to Thick
Clarity: VS2
Flourescence: None
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Very Good

Price: $4500

I am in no way an expert and the jewler is telling me it is a premium cut stone. I have viewed it in person and it looks very nice, white and sparkly to me. But I have heard Asschers are tough to find a good one. Compared to the others I have seen it seems like a very good diamond for the price.... Anybody who can offer any advice would be greatly appreciated. I need to make a decision by Friday or else I would lose the stone. Anyone think I can find a better diamond for around the same price?

how were the patterns?
Did it have an even stepped look in the center?
Did it look very deep like you could fall into it?
Was it firery in bright light?

Well cut asschers are hard to find.

The price is reasonable.
Pretty much midrange.
If it has pleasing patterns and is fiery soulds good to me.
The good polish might or might not be an issue depending on whats not polished to a vg/ex level.
With asschers the eyes win.

I would say that to my eye it appeared to have nice even windmill pattern with a nice 3 step tier look from the center out. It did look deep compared to the others I have seen, I don''t know how deep is too shallow though. I looked at it under a lighted scope and in the jewelry stores regular dim lighting, I have not looked at it in bright light, but it did appear to sparkle pretty good in those conditions. I need to see how fiery in bright light... Anymore help would be appreciated.

sounds good to go to me.
You can look at it from the side and see if the crown is faily high.
10%-15% maybe a little more of the depth being in the crown is the great range.

otherwise look at in some bright light and look for fire expecialy in the area around the table.
Rock it back and forth a little too, the best will put on a fireworks show second to no other cut under those conditions.

Thanks for the input Storm!!! I guess I just hope I can trust my own eyes to pick out "the" diamond. What do you mean about the polish??? The stone looked like it had nice polished edges. The jeweler did say you would want at least good on the polish and the very good on the symmetry really helped the stone sparkle... Anyone else want to chime in I would be grateful... Thanks again.

I don''t have much to add, Storm is our resident expert on assschers. He helped me pick mine and it''s a beauty!!!!

First i want to say im not a diamond cutter.
Second I am a consumer.
I have studied asschers as much as I can but limited availability is a problem.
As you can no doubt guess i have seen far more bad than good ones.

When i hear of an asscher with good patterns and very good symmetry but good polish. Here are my thoughts:
The best case is that the cutter took great care in cutting it but one facet refused to polish so rather then wreck the meet point(lab)
symmetry he stopped at a good polish and took the VG symmetry rating.
As long as its not the table or the middle pavilion facets then there is no issue at all.
But the thing is that the grade gives no clue as whats wrong with the polish or where.
So the bottom line as long as it looks great then no worries.

Thanks for all the help. The facets in the table and middle step area appear to be in the vg/ex polish range. I am thinking after looking at it from the bottom under the 30x scope I saw an area that could fall into that not so highly polished area, where one facet had according to the GIA a very small natural indent (I couldn''t see an indent, but the facet reflected different than the others, or maybe I am just being too picky). At least that is what I gather from the comment section on the map part of the GIA report. The jeweler stated that GIA is very precise and that even under the 30x scope you cannot really see the natural indent which is towards the bottom near the "point" of the diamond. I couldn''t see any indent myself, but the jeweler said obviously it will face up as you see it now and it doesn''t appear to affect any of the sparkle or brillance that much and your eye would never see anything or notice a difference. But I do wonder if that little natural indent spot is the cause for the Good polish rating... Any input on that Storm?

could very well be that the area around the indented natural wouldn't take a vg polish. Doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about.

The natural itself would be counted as an inclusion.

When calling in diamonds and most net purchases I recommend staying with vg/vg or better with asschers but in a diamond you can see yourself good polish is often no problem. I still like to see vg (lab) symmetry but there are exceptions.

So far im not seeing anything said that indicates a no go.

Check the crown height and/or fire, recheck the patterns then its good to go seems to me.

Can you post a pic of it????
