Hello,

I am in the process of buying an engagement ring. I have decided upon and found an Asscher cut that I like, however, since I am a novice at this sort of thing, and it being such a big purchase, I was hoping to get some feedback on the specs of the diamond. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Carat: 2.81
Color: H
Clarity Grade: VS2
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorecence: None

In the GIA diagram, what looks to be measuring the table of the diamond shows 64% and what looks to be measuring from the table to the point at the bottom shows 70.3%.

Have any pictures?
There should be a discount for over 70% depth as there isn't a valid reason for it.
With a 64% table and over 70% depth there is a good chance there is to much in the pavilion and not enough in the crown which isn't good for performance.
Pictures and crown height will tell the story.

Thanks for responding!

Unfortunately no pictures, but I can work on that.

When you refer to performance, are you referring to fire / sparkle?

What is important to me is the fire, I am looking for that sparkle "wow" factor.

Not sure if they are giving me a discount. I am working with a wholesale jeweler. If I state the price could you let me know if that seems reasonable?

yea, smaller tables and higher crowns with the proper pavilion gives more fire.

Yes I can comment on the price or you can search for simulator stones here:

The offer price is $27,500.

From the sound of it, I think I am going to ask them to continue looking for a asscher cut with better table and depth %''s.

Beware these aren''t *always* the best sources for diamonds... you may have found a great person to work with who is knowledgeable, honest etc etc, but just be on your toes and know your stuff because there are many stories on PS of people getting poor deals or misinformation from so-called wholesale jewelers.

PS: trust whatever storm says about the quality of the cut! He knows his stuff. Or else buy your diamond from good old gold, they are the trusted asscher folks around these parts.

Dreamer - thanks for the advice it is much appreciated.

I actually took Storms'' advice and looked up the diamond on PS and saw that it is offered for 4k less than what it was being offered for at the wholesaler. The GIA report number that I have a copy of and what is listed through PS are exactly the same. Maybe I am better off going through somebody else.

I have been reading a lot about the importance of the cut of an asscher. What are the ideal ranges for table % and depth % for an asscher?

Any feedback would be great, thanks again!

I''m no asscher expert, but with fancies like this the best best thing you can do if find a vendor whom you trust (or who PS trusts!) and let them be your eyes. The numbers just don''t tell nearly the whole story with fancies, the way they do with rounds. There is a very mathematical component to rounds that makes it easier for us to assess their cut quality given just the numbers and some pictures. With fancies, you need numbers, sure, but what you really need are pictures and ASET images. Also, with many of the fancies, you can''t tell if something is a dog just from the numbers, so what you end up doing is calling in a lot of diamonds that you would end up rejecting.

So in the end the whole process is just that much simpler with fancies if you can find someone who is a known expert and let them hand select 4-5 stones for you to look at or choose from. For cushion cuts the go-to person is Mark T at engagement rings direct, whereas for asschers the go-to person is Jon (Rhino on PS) at Good old Gold. This is a shop in new york that has a strong online presence. If you go with GOG, they will call in some stones, or you can have them call them in, that are within your price etc, and they will run all their tests on them for light performance, and then they will even film a video of the diamonds in different light conditions so you can see with your eyes how it really performs, and compare the diamonds before making a choice. This is really optimal for choosing a fancy. In addition, you can have the PS crew vet any selections before you buy!

GOG won''t have stones in the size you want in house, since that is a rare size, but they can get them for you. The closest they have in their inventory are the two below, which are just under 2ct. As you can see, they look very very different in the pictures!
