Hello everybody
35.gif

I''m a long time lurker and hope you don''t mind but have decided to post because I need some help from you experts. I''ve just been lucky enough to buy an Asscher cut diamond ring. The stats are:

Asscher: 1.01ct, I/J in colour, SI1 clarity, with dimensions of 5.48 x 5.58 x 3.79. The Asscher faces up white and sparkles well. It only appears to have a yellow tint through the loupe. I can see a few carbon spots around the edges but these can''t be seen with the naked eye and only through the loupe.

The side diamonds are Trapezoids and are a total carat weight of .44ct, H/I in colour and VS1.

The shank is 18k white gold but I think has been custom made. It''s not a great setting and the gaps between the diamonds will drive me mad so I''ll have to re-set it at some point.

I''m essentially a coloured gemstone collector and have very rarely ventured into diamonds (apart from coloured diamonds) so a white diamond isn''t as familiar to me as I know it is to you guys. Basically all I know about an Asscher (and this is very basic) is that this definitely isn''t a Royal Asscher (due to the number of steps). I know to look for windmills, nicely cut corners and good proportions but apart from that .... it''s over to you! I know nothing else!!!

I only paid $2k for this ring and feel I''ve got a bargain so I won''t be upset if you say that this Asscher isn''t a particularly good one. However, I''d really love your opinions, good and bad.

Congratulations on your purchase!

As you know, we can''t really tell you anything without seeing pics, and knowing something about the specs (ie. depth, table %, crown, pavilian angle).

Do you have any pics of it?

Also, a deal is only a deal if you got exactly what you want!

Hi there!

I thought I had uploaded a picture (I use Photobucket) but for some reason it''s not showing

Any tips on how to upload please and then I''ll happily share pictures!!!

I''m not sure if this has worked or not!!!

Welcome!

Pricescope has a FAQ - How to upload/resize images

Basically there is an "attach a file" button above where you post. So if you have the pic on your hard drive on your computer, it is easy just to locate it from your computer and just attach. Not sure about the Photobicket since I have never used it!

I think it worked!

Nice diamond! DO you have other pics?

Ooooo these are coming out a bit small aren''t they? Do you all have magnifying glasses?!

Think I''m getting the hang of this now!

Last one! Blurry (sorry) handshot!

I''ve just noticed in the photo above it looks like one side of the Asscher is not straight but I think that''s a trick of the camera because it is straight!

By the way, I don''t have angle measurements etc because this is uncertified.

Looks pretty to me! Where did you end up finding it?

As long as you love it, it seems like it was a fantastic find! I see what you're talking about with the gap, but it shouldn't be a huge problem to get it remade with more delicate prongs and no gap.

It looks great to me, but I am certainly no expert! And what a steal for the price! I would get a new setting for sure so there won''t be the gap between stones that you mentioned. Depending on how much you feel like spending, Leon Mege makes amazing settings.

Yes, where did you happen upon this delightful find?

Thank you for your kind words. If I tell you where I bought this, I''m going to lose all credibility!!!

I actually bought it from a private seller on Ebay. She needed the money due to a change in personal circumstances and after we''d exchange a lot of emails and I''d blown up the pictures she had with the auction to the extent that I could see most of the diamond fairly easily, I thought I''d take the risk. If I buy white diamonds they normally have to be a G or above and I''m actually pleasantly surprised at how white this diamond looks (apart from through the loupe)!

I was more worried that it would have inclusions visible to the eye which for me is a "no no" but the seller assured me it hadn''t - and she has been 100% honest. It''s not often you find such genuine finds on Ebay and a wonderful kind seller as well. So I was very very pleasantly surprised when the ring turned up. The only thing that slightly dissapoints is that it doesn''t look "big" for a 1ct diamond. I have a 1ct oval that looks twice the size!!! Oh well, I guess I''ll just have to buy a 2ct Asscher next time

The one thing I''m not sure about is whether the crown is too high so it''s obscuring slightly the view of the clean crisp steps below? The table seems a good size, not too big or small but it''s so difficult to accurately measure and I''ve given up because each time I got different readings

Your thoughts (good or bad) would be greatly appreciated.

Beautiful! That asscher looks like a great cut to me. Hard to tell without personally looking at it or seeing the stats, but it was a great deal, sounds like. Congrats!

Do you plan on getting it appraised?

Personally..I''ve found a bunch of gems (of all sorts) on ebay, and I think you have found a totally fabulous find. Also, what is "good" and "not good" is completely subjective (for the most part). Even the most experienced expert cannot tell you what pleases you. I would feel so lucky to have that particular ring. Great job!

asscher looks great, nice high crown.
You do need to get that one prong looked at it is moved to one side and just barely holding on.
For insurance reasons and there being no cert I would get it appraised asap.

Thank you everybody. I really appreciate your input.

By the way I forgot to say, that as I''m a coloured gemstone collector I have all the testing equipment and made sure that as soon as this arrived it got tested!

I get everything appraised (which as you can imagine costs a fortune!) so this will be done in the next two weeks so I''ll let you know the outcome.

Thanks again - and it''s great to know that the high crown isn''t a problem.
