I had a vew spare moments and I took some ASET pictures, then modeled the stones in DiamCalc. The picture on the left is the DC model and the one on the right is a photo of the same stone through the handheld ASET. None of these are especially good stones although they aren't terrible either. I think this may be one of the areas where the ASET is better than the IS.

Just a quick one: is there a new option for ASSET or are those DC models on the left generated with the 'Gilbertonscope + white" lighting scheme ?

Pretty good family resemblance anyway!

very interesting neil, thanks for taking the time to do this.

could you clarify what you mean by the statement above?

Great Neil, but you are comparing ASET with back light to photo''s without.
If you can convert the diamCalc files to Gem Adviser - drop down in top left - under FILE - you you can post them here (same as posting a photo) and people can make their own ASET models with the new ASET without back light - and ideal-scope images too.

The new DiamCalc upgrade is still being worked on - soon we hope.

Belle,

I find the idealscope is not very good for separating mediocre stones from one another and identifying what it is that''s mediocre about them. I''m still not convinced that the ASET will do this either but the images of these stones are very different from one another and there is a lot of data here, if I can learn how to read it. Under an Ideascope, I think these stones would all look pretty similar but I didn''t take the pictures to look.

Garry,

Thanks. I''ll post them as gemadvisor files tomorrow. The black/white thing is definitely distracting but I''m quite pleased at how similar the pink/green/blue portions look.

Neil from a buying perspective I screen with the ideal-scope (say 70-90% rejection) and then look hard with the ASET at the remainder.
I use tweezers and tilt the stones thru a small amount of tilt - about 5 to 10 degrees each way. And the decision to buy or reject is made based on that comparison. it is an art as much as a science.

If your scan is very accurate then you should get much better results than those.

i agree, there seems to be much information here. i am looking forward to learning more about the implications.

if you do get a chance, i think it would be interesting to have these images for comparison.

Here's a Gemadvisor generated image for one of them along with the photograph associated with it. This is the second stone in the list above.

Here's IS, ASET and GemAdvisor ASET models of 6 different stones (5 of the above plus one more). While I've been building these pictures, I've been showing the stones to my friends and neighbors and collecting their opinions on them. The Gem Advisor files are all available attached to the previous posts. Any guesses on what's popular and what's not?

Hi Neil & Garry,

Just curious. What do you find best depicts leakage? The black or white backlighting?

I''m not sure, but I like the black. Most of the stones I see are mounted and a different amount of the transmitted light is blocked with each different mounting. By blocking it all, the resultant images becomes more standardized with the images of the stones that were done unmounted.

i am away for the weekend and do not have my progams etc
later today i will come out 2 play.

But let me say

I like to see the leakage and know that it is well dispersed and small bits that can add to contrast - not large dead patches.

For e.g. you do not want a leakage spot beside a blue spot - that is a disaster!

And it is good to use the Gem adviser to tilt the stone a bit side to side.

. Pardon my ignorance. What is ''GemAdviser''?

You can read about and download GemAdviser from here Bruce http://www.pricescope.com/MSU/default.asp - it is a small free version of DiamCalc.

You can open files like the one attached to this post with it. Or you can save the file, and as you do, you can change the .gem on the end to .dmc - then you can open the saved file with your DiamCalc software.

You can view the stone in a variety of lightings - including ASET, which is under the light globe and > more options.
Play with it

Garry,

I notice that your GA file contains quite a bit more information about the stone than mine in the text description. I presume that this was generated by diamcalc and came along with the conversion. Why is mine missing? Is it because I started out by importing data from a .srn file and yours came from some other source. Is there a way, short of typing or buying a Helium that I can get this data included?

Neil

Do you have or are getting the desktop ASET?

I am expecting AGS to be shipping mine this week...I'd volunteer to image those stones with the Firescope, my light leakage tests, and the B Scope to see if any further interesting observations could be ascetained.

The B Scope image 6 for those would be interesting to see as well.

Rockdoc,

Nope, no desktop on order yet. I''m in the process of getting my certification as an AGS ICGA and, as soon as I become an official AGS member, the price of the tool drops considerably. I''ll probably buy one at that time. It will depend on what people think of them by then. My handheld photos are looking pretty good and are recognizably similar to the DC models. When you get your desktop model, take and post some pictures along with the DiamCalc/Sarin generated models and we can compare. I think this mostly establishes that the models and the photographs both do a reasonably good job of simulating what is seen through the scope. I''m still working on how to interpret that data and whether the images can be reasonably used to predict if the stone will be popular when the stone is seen in person.

I don''t own the stones and I doubt the owners will be interested in having them tied up for long enough to send to Florida while we experiment. The owners are all neighbors in my building so if someone wants one of them, they can be retrieved immediately so we aren''t interfering with anyone''s business by doing this. This would not be the case if I sent them out. If we want to design a genuinely scientific experiment, these probably aren''t the correct stones to choose anyway because there are too many other differences that may be important and that are difficult for observers to separate from cut preference (like color). I''ve shown the set to 24 people so far and recorded their opinions. there are some definite patterns among the people who''ve seen the stones in person but there is a real shortage of opinions of people using the various images.

Hi Neil

Good luck on your qualifying for the ICGA program. I am doing the same thing, as I know Richard is too. I''m an affilate member and just got the results of the yearly exam back, with good marks. So glad about that - only answered one question incorrectly out of the 50 that had to be answered.

Have you gotten the APPA course yet? The qualification process is quite a bit to do.

In my recent conversations with Jasmine at AGS''s equipment dept, I was told they have changed the supplier of the hand held unit, which I am supposed to receive this week, so I am curious to see any differences in the quality of the photos it might yield, as well as any improvements with the desktop ASET as compared to the hand held unit.

I appreciate and understand that we just can''t ship other''s good around. But, if I can help particpate in any meaningful testing I am always willing to do it.

Best regards,

Rockdoc

Rockdoc,

I'm in the process of going through the APPA now. I applied for membership back in 2003 and it took more than 2 years to process the application. I was elected for membership this last summer. That made me eligible to apply as an RJ, which I immediately did. After completing that, it takes another year to get the CG (nothing is required for this year, just put in the time as an RJ plus the GG from GIA). That plus the APPA is the minimum requirement for ICGA so I guess I'm well on track.

You're right, it's an annoying slow process if you aren't a spinoff from an AGS store.

neil,
i did not realize you wanted opinions on the order of popularity of these stones.
here is my guesstimate on their rankings...

Sorry Neil, you got it right - you need to buy the Helium Polished scanner from AGS.
I just picked a stone at random and it was one from a manufacturer in India where Heliuum is more readily available among the high end manufacturers.
