Man, I''m so sad. I just read online that Artie Lange attempted suicide by stabbing himself. I''m a huge HS fan and have been listening to Artie suffering through a lot over the years. I know this happens to non-famous people everyday and that''s just as awful. I can just tell he''s a really great person who just doesn''t think very highly of himself even though he''s clearly a very-intelligent, well spoken and funny man. What a shame.

Really? I hadn''t heard this. When did he do that? I thought that he has been clean for a while. I don''t listen to HS everyday, but DH insists that it is on when he is in the car with me.

I am assuming that he is still alive then? What kind of condition is he in? Will he be ok? That is so weird because I was listening to Raw Dog this morning and he was on. I have only ever heard him on twice.

Apparently, this was on Saturday. He was on a "break" from the show due to what seemed liked stress related to his struggle to stay sober. He''s still in the hospital but they were able to save him even though he had extensive bleeding.

I hadn''t heard that either--just that he was taking a break or something. He definitely seems to have low self-esteem but isn''t that a comic thing? What seemed concerning about him though was his addicitive tendencies (food, alcohol, etc) and I wonder if he was under the influence when this happened. It is sad though and glad that he seems to be ok ...i''ll have to go check the news/gossip sites.

He tried stabbing himself 9 times. 6 hesitant stab wonds, and 3 really deep ones.

I think of all the ways to try to kill yourself, this is a pretty brutal way to go. I cannot imagine his personal suffereing to do that to himself. My heart goes out to him and his family.

Oh my, I was just logging on to post a thread on this... I also love Howard and the whole cast. (I bought Sirius just before he came over, solely to listen to him!) I was so shocked and upset to hear about this. I think that Artie is a wonderfully kind, caring, and (obviously) funny human being. I truly hope that he can get some quality, long-term care for his mental issues. It would be such a sad day to see him pass away...

Hugs and love to him and his family!

Has this been validated? I called to DH to see if he had heard and he said no, and he said that he wouldn''t believe it until Howard 100 or 101 reported it. Was it reported by Howard and he didn''t hear it? I did a google search and there are a whole slew of sources covering it. It is so unfortunate, but honestly I can''t say I am surprised. He has such a hard time coping with his addictions. Does anyone know if he was miserable from trying to remain sober or if he got high and freaked out?

My husband is a huge Howard Stern fan (well, not so much anymore, but he''s been listening for 20+ years so now it''s more like a habit). The NY Post reported the stabbing information, Howard Stern and staff are not discussing the incident or anything related to it. Artie''s family has requested that whatever is going on and HS Show has stated their respecting his privacy. The show has fired people in the past and not ever discussed it (I think Jackie was let go this way) and there is lots of speculation that Artie was fired as well, prior to the incident, obviously.

I honestly am not fond of the HS show, but hear plenty by proxy and I am honestly impressed that the show takes that stance on the issue. That is pretty cool of them. Although it is odd that they will talk about everyone elses business, but not one of their own.

I heard this on the radio this AM, and I also heard that his mother found him! If the latter is true, how awful to find your child that way!

RQ, you and I are in the same boat on every count. I am not a fan or follower of celebrity gossip but hear much about the HS show because as PS has been likened to TGal''s water cooler, the show has become my husband''s. I am not such a fan, but he tells me about parts of the show that he finds interesting. I''m home today, and he has the show on so I heard what Howard and crew were saying about Artie and all that is going on. Too bad they, and other media outlets, can''t respect people''s privacy except when it hits close to home.

As a listener of the show for years, I can tell you that they normally do not discuss anyone''s personal business without their consent. I believe, because it had already been released in some news outlets, they decided to address it briefly this morning. They''ve known since the weekend as I understand it and kept quiet at first so they may have only mentioned it because it was "out".

In any case, I think this is an awful situation for Artie to be in...whether the public knows about it or not.

Last, it is VERY common for all of the participants on that show to talk about their personal lives - the good, the bad and the ugly. So, while there is a lot of talk about the gossip of others, they''re not immune to it.

Very sad. Addiction is a terrible disease that is stigmatized so much not enough has been spent on research and treatment.

I agree...and most people are too embarrassed to talk about it. Artie has been "open" about his problems but mostly in a comedic sense.

Pupp, I was referring to the show talking about celebrities that aren''t on the show, not disclosing information about their own lives. As a listener-by-proximity I have heard the cast discuss and disect the lives of celebrities on numerous occasions, including having the National Inquirer guy sharing his "scoop" on a regular basis, my guess is the people they dicusss didn''t give their permission beforehand. I think there''s a big difference between discussing your own life and the lives of others, they have the power to edit what is discussed, people not involved in the conversation do not.

My understanding is Artie has been quite open about his addiciton, including admitting to coming to work high on countless occassions (which was pretty obvious without him disclosing said information). I''m glad that the show has decided to keep quiet about what is going on. I find it sad for Artie that his personal pain is being broadcast on page 6 and other media outlets, whether he''s discussed his problems on air in the past or not. It would be horribly embarrassing and terrible to go through such a traumatic experience and have the media hounding you and your grieving family on top of all of the other things they are facing.

Howard confirmed it this morning.

I misunderstood...you''re right - celebrity gossip is often a part of the show. While that typically seems harmless and in good humor, it''s not always - I guess especially if you''re the subject.

Gosh, I still just can''t believe this - maybe because "funny" people seem so happy - even though I KNOW he is an addict who has suffered much hardship in his life. I''ve become so attached to him over the years of listening.

As always when someone does this I wonder what pain they must have been in to inflict that kind of harm on themselves. You naturally will try to survive at all costs. I just hope that he gets the help he needs.

I''m month to month with Sirius now, becuase if Howard goes after this year, I''m done too. I''ve grown very fond of him and his cast.

Oh Artie. If I could only give him a hug.

Addiction is a terrible disease that is often strengthen by the person self-medicating for other mental/emotional/physical problems. There is no cure, only hope of remission. Unfortunately it takes a huge amount of dedication, willingness, and time. Most people don''t realize the about of shame, anger, sadness and depression that accompanies addiction. I can only hope he gets the help he needs to learn how to forgive himself, quiet is obsession and live a healthy and happy life.
