WIDGET ... WOW. You have lovely taste... Actually the watches and the re-set ruby were my favorite along with your warm color studs (I know, I'm a plebian) but I'd take all any them any day! You seem to prefer three stone rings, I've noticed (and you have a lovely collection of them)... I have to say I've become recently enamored of them... though three stone asschers (all asschers) aren't to my personal taste. My dream diamond ring is a three stone 'modern' cushion like the one posted of Moremoremore's... but in a deco style setting with claw prongs. So beautiful.

Here is my FAVORITE art deco (?) ring.. also a pendant, from Tiffany.

I don't actually own any art deco peices right now... but I'm working on it. Jewelery wasn't a huge priority for me till I joined PS. Now it's an obsession. Although I've always loved art deco style pieces.

I love that zig zag sapphire. I can''t get behind anywhere that sells over the net without a return policy... even ebay vendors have that!!

But it''s a get site to browse at... never been there before... reasonable prices too... what a shame.

I love this EC sapphire ring, I saw an EC sapphire on a bus when I was a child and never forgot it!!!!

(By the way...I think Melsantiques will give you a return window if you talk to her first and assure her that your intentions are honorable. I bought a pair of earrings from her after having told her that I was 99% sure I''d love them, judging from her excellent photographs and description, but that there was NO WAY I''d lay out that much money without a return policy. She said OK. Turns out they were as nice as...or even better...than they looked.)

I woke up thinking about your comment that I was partial to 3-stone rings...you''re right! I''d never thought of that!

Actually, even those rings I have that are mainly solitaires tend to be mounted in such a way that they cover a lot of E/W finger real estate. I think it''s because my fingers tend to get ''fatter'' at the base, and wide mountings look better. When my DIL tried on my mom''s asscher, I was surprised how ''wrong'' it looked on her skinny fingers!

widget... NO. I love asschers. But as solitares or with other step cuts lilke traps or baguettes. What I don''t like is three stone asscher rings with three asschers. I said that badly.

....is there a particular description that defines art deco? Versus say...Edwardian or Victorian? I''d love to know. As a neophyte lover of things vintage, I want to get up to speed.

What I do know for sure is that I love ALL of these rings!!!

FG....I''m no expert, but IN GENERAL, I think of Victorian jewelry as being heavier, mostly YG, often using ''subdued'' gemstones like garnet, onyx, topaz, etc (probably because Victoria was in mourning so many years).

....things "lightened up" considerably after she died and Edward took the throne: More delicate, feminine, curvy sometimes floral designs, lots of filigree, usually in platinum (sometime in there they figured out how to use platinum in jewelry...)

I think of Art Deco as bolder and more daring....more befitting those brazen hussies of the flapper era

: Designs often more angular or architectural, almost always in plat or WG, use of bright precious gemstones as well as diamonds..

(These are really just generalizations...there's probably much more to it, and of course there was a lot of mixed up, transitional stuff between eras, too.)

Typical Styles of Different Eras
Victorian Antique Engagement Rings (1835-1900) often set in yellow or rose gold, Victorian rings have both simple elegant designs to very intricate ones. With the newfound wealth of the Industrial Revolution, and the new discovery of diamond mines in South Africa, many Victorian settings feature rows of diamonds, cut with an extra facet on the bottom (Called "mine cut"). Many Victorian rings also included pearls, although these are not recommended for every day wear. The classic Tiffany six-prong diamond solitaire was introduced in 1886!

Edwardian Engagement Rings (1900-1920) When the oxyacetylene torch was invented, platinum became the vogue metal for antique engagement rings. Jewelers began crafting lacy and pierced shapes, milgraining, scrollwork, and filigree detail on the mountings. Along with rose-cut diamonds, brilliant sapphires were especially popular during the Edwardian era.

Art Deco Engagement Rings(1920-1930) The 20s were an age of machinery, exploration, jazz, and exoticism. Art Deco antique engagement rings reflect the era with a streamlined geometric look. They also often reflect fashion trends of the era, with allusions to Egyptian, Asian, and Native American cultures. Early Art Deco rings diverged from pale Edwardian designs with colorful, contrasting gemstones, although soon went to a platinum diamond-packed look for a glittering streamlined look, ala the Chrysler Building. Art Deco rings are currently the most popular antique engagement rings for newly engaged couples.
Things to Keep in Mind About Antique Engagement Rings
While diamonds are currently the most popular stone for engagement bands, this wasn''t always true. Be careful of softer stones such as emerald, pearl, and opal, which may have internal cracks or may be easily damaged.

Look carefully at the craftsmanship of the ring. This is often what makes a difference when buying an antique engagement ring. If you were to try to commission a modern jeweler to match the work on an Edwardian ring, you would end up spending many times more than what you''d pay for an authentic ring of the era. Avoid poor replica rings which mimic the style, but can''t hold a candle to the quality and character of an older ring.

If you are on a budget, but want the look of a larger diamond, consider an antique engagement ring from the 1930s or 40s. The diamonds in these bands were often set in an elaborately carved setting which made the diamond appear larger.

I'm sensing that this ring is soon going to be part of your amazing collection. I found it at www.estatediamondjewelry.com from the list above. The center is 3.13 carats it's onyx and emerald. I was drooling onto my keyboard when I saw it.

It can be yours for $26,500. Worth every penny if you ask me. I'd take this over a Daniel K any day.

underside of the ring... I''ve also seen a similar version on one of the ebay sellers who sells only estate rings via ebay live auctions... can''t remember who though, but that ring was the exact same design but with alternating "petals" of sapphires and rubies... very patriotic! (heh)

My e-ring is from the 1920s but nowhere as lavish as the ones being posted above but still of the art deco period. I'ts center stone is a .65 old european cut, with baquettes on the sides and a couple small accent diamonds. I'm a huge fan of the old stuff
