Not sure if this is the right thread for this question, but I was curious if anyone has heard of the Arges cut diamond. I saw one in a store today, and thought it was kind of interesting, quite different from a 58 facet round. Very white lightish looking, lots of scintillation. Lots of presence in dark, dim lighting. I Looked at it in an Ideal-scope (I picked one up from the D. Atlas website, very fun) and it has virtually no dark/black arrows as you might expect in a well cut 58 facet stone, -- just all pink/red ( o.k., a couple of tiny dark strikes in there, but, otherwise, just a featureless mass of pinks). According to their promo literature, they are made in Belgium, designed with some amount of input by Gabi Tolkowski. What''s up with this? Anyone seen one, or know what to make of their longevity/virtues in comparison to the old standard round brilliant?

It''s a recent branded cut which came out on the market in July of 2004. I''ve yet to see one, and there''s not much technical info available on the web regarding the cut.

They come accompanied with an HRD report, which is a nice feature. HRD is an accurate and consistent European laboratory. They also come accompanied with a GemPrint (and a disk that plays the GemPrint''s audible "melody").

At this time they are marketed through jewelers who do their buying through IJO, a large organization of jewelers who pool their buying resources in order to make competitive purchases.

I appreciate your info. If you happen to be in the neighborhood of that store again, why don''t you ask them for a copy of the HRD certificate, and then post the info here for everybody''s edification. The asking price would be interesting as well.

The stone I saw was a 1.01 F SI2 (not a bad SI2, not a great one...a cluster of small black crystals/their reflections right in the center of the table, but eyeclean). Asking price was $5500 (looks like about 10% below rap). I didn''t look at the cert. Maybe they can e-mail it and I''ll post it. Interesting side note: apparently $100M worth of cut stones from the very first major batch were snatched in some ludicrous hollywood-esque robbery. Brinks truck loaded with ''em snagged en route to the airport or something. The major market introduction is on hold until the manufacturer can make more.

woops. wrong post.

Is this some new kind of advertising ?

There are several branded round cuts with many facets like that. The contrast (black specs, or reflecting facets like the arrows in the H&A) are formed differently or not at all... Two more are talked about around here: "Solasfera" and "Eighternity" (sorry, I am not guilty for the tacky names

).

SI2 sounds like a nice bargain if you find a clean-looking one.

It was an interesting stone. Actually, I think I did my math wrong. The Stone comes in a tad over rap, I believe. I''ve decided on a more traditonal round brilliant at this point, anyway, but I look forward to finding out what comes of this line when they get out in the market...assuming the Brink guys don''t get some friendly visitors again!
