I'm not sure I agree with that "underpaid" part.
I've see single apples at TJ's for $1.79 each.

Yes.

Throughout my career I was overeducated and underpaid. Comparatively speaking for all the education I went through I should have earned more money but I went into my field eyes wide open and have no regrets. I was fully aware and still chose it because I knew I would be able to make a diference and enjoy doing so and for me that made it worthwhile a decision. My choice entirely and no one twisted my arm.

I worked with an under-served patient population and they deserve good care despite the funds lacking. So yes, I was underpaid but I did not regret choosing my career nor the area I specialized in during the time I was working.

I fully believe money isn't the end all be all of being happy and content.

And I also believe education is its own reward. I love learning and never want to stop learning. Formal education or informal education is always a worthwhile goal.
 
I worked in nonprofit for many years. I was getting paid less than retail store workers even though I had a bachelor's and years of relevant work experience. Then I got tired of being overworked and underpaid so I made the jump to the tech industry.

I would rather be sad with money than sad without money... :bigsmile: not that I am rich...;(
 
HI:

I've spent my life educating myself to perform my job to the best of my ability. I went to grad school not to get or keep a job , but because I love learning. FWIW I get paid an extra $1.25/hr for my Masters. LOL

Goodness! That is dedication! May I ask what your degrees are in, and what career or personal progression took you through this journey?

My son was diagnosed at age 3 with leukemia so I decided to stay at home while he was in treatment. During the 4 year treatment, I had 2 more kiddos and my husband's career really took off. So I just never went back to work. Honestly, it took some time to see staying at home as an opportunity instead of a sacrifice. Now I am completely grateful for how it all worked out!

I just wrote about this a few weeks ago on another thread.

It's amusing how life sometimes follows a path that is completely unlike what we had planned, yet always for the better.
 
In my opinion there is no such thing as overeducation. I love learning and will do so until I can. Knowledge is something no one can take away until aging hits that is.

I was overeducated for the career which provided a retirement but don't regret it. Besides, learning of any kind, not just in school, is a lifelong endeavor that should be embraced.
 
I guess I’m well educated but in my field (higher education) it’s necessary even though we make less than others with no advanced education. I’ve been in it for over 25 years and it’s only recently that I didn’t have to scrimp every penny. So not overeducated for my field but the salaries in my industry make me feel like it (it will be less painful when my doctoral student loan is paid off).

Yes, it will. Keep up the good work! (and FWIW, I recommend you read/reread your thesis/dissertation again ((and again)), you'll find it puts a smile on your face....added value where the remuneration may be the pits)

I prefer highly educated and vastly underpaid. I'm a teacher. With my Master's. DH: certifications that would equate to a Bachelor's makes almost twice what I make.
It's unfair. But this country doesn't seem to value education.

Unfortunately for me, I love my job. But I don't encourage anyone to become a teacher, which is sad.
