I think my deep down personal style is attracted to over the top chunky blingy things. I have a sworovski crystal studded iphone and other sparkly personal items. Right now my ring is set in a solitaire, but my hearts desire is a three sided pave split shank halo setting for my relatively large stone. Is anyone else attracted to what some would find "gaudy"? I'm pretty conservative in other areas, my dress is pretty conservative and classic (twinsets and wide legged pants for work), jeans and cute tops on the weekends. Do you think I can have one huge sparkle covered piece (my wedding set) and get away with it if everything else is toned down?

I hear you!

Think you just described me perfectly! I am very to attracted to big blingy things, but am very girly but conservative in my dress. I too long for a massive solitaire ( think 1.75 to 2.5 carat on a size 4.5 finger :sun: ) to go along with my 2.11ct 7 stone eternity ring. Too much, probably, will I do it, hell yeah. Funds willing!

I do wear other diamond rings, earring and my bracelet but whist very sparkly they are not big or OTT. I just want my wedding set to do the talking.

So count me in your group! No subtlety here! :praise:

:wavey:

Some people think I'm a gaudy show-off and others think I'm tasteful. I enjoy wearing lots of jewelry.

Gaudy.. probably. But I like it. I'd wear a lot more if I had more :)

I'm starting to think of jewelry as my security blanket :wink2: When I'm feeling painfully shy I just load on my favorite pieces

Let me put it like this.

Last year, in November, my MIL came for a visit, and we went shopping at the local flea market together. She spotted a skirt that she thought was very, very me - she went into raptures about how it was my style, and bought it for me on the spot as my Christmas present for that year, relieved that she'd spotted something to my taste with me there to corroborate.

The skirt? It's a floor-length circle skirt, purple overlaid with black tulle spotted with red velvet polka dots. It's the red velvet polka dots that make it, I say.

Most people with a story like this would conclude by being huffy about their MIL's impugning their good taste. Me? Everybody I've told the story to has laughed ... and then trailed off with the realization that it's only a *little* more over-the-top then what I usually wear.

Gaudy, opulent, luxe, whatever - I'm there.

My taste has calmed down a lot over the years. I used to love my Bedazzler though.

I will be delightfully tacky if I'm fortunate enough to live until I think it's appropriate to go all out with the Liberace look. I kind of look at it like this: when you're younger and still have at least a bit of that youthful glow and gravity hasn't quite taken over, you don't need a lot of adornment. When you're older and things have fallen down, all the tautness of youth and the exuberant glow has given way to a lot of powder and blush, you NEED all the added sparkle you can get!

This happens to be the perfect rationale for me because I expect it to be a very long time before I accumulate any sort of serious sparklies!

Also, I fully intend to walk around in tiaras, maribou-trimmed heels, and gold lame tracksuits when I'm 80.

ETA: Sizzle, I have a Swarovski crystal-covered phone as well (pink!), I do love blingy/gaudy/tacky things but in moderation. I think your princess would look great in a three sided pave setting. Why not? If you like it, then go for it.

You owe me another keyboard, monnie  I wear earrings, one for each piercing, a diamond watch, pendant, bracelet, my blingy wedding set, and 1-2 RHR when I go out. Most of these pieces have diamonds. I consider them to be classic pieces and I'm comfortable wearing them. I would need to be wearing monnie's tiara to feel gaudy or tacky  Her other ideas are somewhat questionable, IMO :cheeky:

Bahaha! I think I'd better tread carefully here!

I am mostly just trying to console myself and rationalize not having a ton of jewelry to deck myself with at the moment. I didn't think it would be prudent for me to ask for additional jewelry while waiting for my e-ring...but now that the proposal has come and gone it must be time for a new piece, right? :naughty:

I didn't know that you were engaged. Many congrats :appl: Is there a linky to your ring?

I'm awful at linking here. There is a thread in LIW called "Please remove me" and there are pics within. Thanks! (Sorry for the threadjack, Sizzle.)

This is the funniest thing I've read...I guess being a diamond lover, I don't think of big blingy diamonds and gems (in appropriate places) as being gaudy and tacky. I don't mind a lot of bling as long as it is not....glued on every fluorescent acrylic nail, hanging like a chandelier off one's belly button, or around the neck of a spoiled lap-pooch.

As for clothing, as long as you have the artistic flair, you have a funky sense of style, a quirky sense of humor, or you don't look plain CRAZY, go for it!

I'm plain boring (sensible neutral color clothes, classic pumps, solitaires), but I admire people who dare to express themselves with wild, reckless abandon.

I wish I had enough jewellery that if I were to put it all on I could be considered gaudy......

I cant wait to be able to pull off the huge polka dot hats with plaid pants and stiped shirts. I know there is no way I could get away with it now, but in about 40 years I am all over it.

As of right now I do a few things that some of my friends wouldnt do. I consider it to be fabulous. I like to go agaisnt the grain whenever possible. I paint my nails dark red, so dark that it looks black during the summer. I like my hair BIG. Not Jersey big, but its curly and the thicker it looks the happier I am. I push it and poke it throughout the day so that it grows. I have a "thing" for crocodile and patent leather. The new shoes I just bought last night are both patent leather and crocodile in one adorable shoe. Nearly every bag and shoe I own is shiny. Oh do I love things that are shiny!!

I've totally eyed gold lame track jackets from American Apparel...

Ha! Monarch just totally described my goal for when I'm elderly! I love over-the-top anything. But I curb myself, to be a little more subtle at this point in my life. Its the one part about getting old and crazy that I'm looking forward too!
Oh, and I also have a bedazzled phone!

My Fiance always says that the things I like are guady....but all of the things I do like have one major thing in common:

SPARKLE.

If it sparkles, its mine.

In fact, a lot of my friends know about this obsession with sparkles and also don't fail to let me know that I'm the only person they know with this serious obsession (they don't know about my fellow price scope friends though ;) )

Also, when I'm in the mood I love to wear pretty bright colors (not neon, but bright...there is a difference). I do wear a lot of white/black/earth tones but I really do love some beautiful pinks, purples, blues. YUM. :lickout:

I knew it wasn't just me! I figured if ever I was to find more like me. It would be on here

No, honestly I like minimalism for myself.

I'm an ugly old fat slob.
The only thing nice about my appearance is iRock.
So maybe it averages out and I'm invisible.

Yes. My e-ring was called "80's ridiculous" on theknut. I loved it.

I think as you have defined it, I'm not really gaudy or tacky but I always envy those who are... like at christmas I cannot bring myself to do anything but white lights and really streamlined basic stuff but my *favorite* houses are delightfully obnoxious! The more stuff they put up there the better! I only wear solid colors - I am not a flashy dresser, but there is an inner hippie I don't give the light of day lol If I wear two rings (one per hand) that's a lot, but I love to see women decked out in all sorts of stuff.

I say go for it :)

I love and adore leopard print (any animal prints really) so some people might consider that gaudy. Clothing, hand bags, bedding, whatever...I am obsessed with leopard print!

That's TOTALLY ME! I have loved sparkly things since I was a child and EVERYONE knows that's me. It's funny because I don't wear alot of flashy things, but I do want one RIDICULOUS sparkle!

Yessssss!!! A fellow sparkle obsessed twin...I don't feel so alone now! :) My wallet has sparkles on it. SO says the things I like are "obnoxious"....I have to kindly remind him that, YES...thats the whole point :) I should take a picture of some of sparkly things (wallets...purse...) its absurd and I love it. I actually get a lot of compliments on my sparkly stuff:)

I have a sparkly wallet too!!!

Nashville: The Bedazzler....hahahahaha.

I wouldn't describe myself as gaudy/tacky, but I do love a bit of bling! I totally think that you can have an over the top set as long as you don't drip bling everywhere else (though a blingy pair of earrings with a blingy wedding set would be fine too, lol!). I think that whatever you're comfortable with is fine...

I guess you could count me into this group. Regarding clothing, if it's got sparkles, crystals, sequins, bold colors and patterns then I'm all over it. Plus I don't care one whit if it's got sparkles, I'm still wearing all of my jewelry with it. Hell, I still wear Christmas sweaters every once and awhile. I guess that makes me the heighth of tacky.

I think I am "eccentric" more than tacky or gaudy... I blend in things together that most probably would cringe over... like plaid and flowers, stripes and paysley... The only thing I have that is out of the norm is my wedding set. I love that it is blingy and had a nice presence on my hand :)
