Same thing in the St. Clare house--no flowers and no gift. My birthday is in January and I usually pick out something and tell him it's also my Valentine present. I'm on a perpetual diet so no chocolate.
I always get my husband a big box of candy--he loves getting it and takes it to the office so I'm not tempted. And I really need to make sure he feels appreciated.....but it's not a big day to ME. My best friend died on Valentines day from cancer years ago, and the day has lost its charm.
I also ban flowers from the house on Mother's Day weekend. Just an excuse to jack up prices and believe me, I get treated well by my guys al year along. A card is suffcient.

We are a couple of old cynics when it comes to V day. It is our wedding anniversary in March though, so I will save my giant hints and 'oops, I accidentaly emailed you this' for then.

This was my favorite post so far. That's so fun. My husband and I both don't really care for getting or giving cards--ever. We just don't get it. Anyway, we occasionally give each other cards that make no sense or are tacky/goofy. This could be our new valentines thing.
Lottie, I always thought that the giant, two-feet-tall V-day cards were kind of funny. Maybe someday you can give your DH a giant version of the Cliff Richard singing card!

Much of my life I never seemed to be going out with someone during that date, so never got the over the top flowers or boxes of chocolate that some people get (though I got to see my sister experience that a couple times, including a huge decorated heart shaped box of Margie's candies. Oh how I wanted to experience that at least once! I did find and fall in love and marry the man I choose to spend the rest of my life with. However he happens to not show his love in those kind of gestures, in fact scoffs at people who do those things.
I love my life, and my life with him, but I do resent the holiday for engendering expectations that for most people, won't happen. I'm in my 40's and despite knowing it is silly and stupid, there is a small part of me who is a teenage girl wanting a romantic valentines who is still waiting!

I do have to say though, that I really enjoy seeing older men (think 70+) buying flowers on this holiday or seeing them in the card aisle spending FOREVER picking out the perfect card for their wife. Makes me melt.

What a nice sentiment. My DH is no where near that age but he spends a lot of time buying his card for me--and "draws" in jewellery where none is present. Tacky, but the notion/effort is not lost on me.
cheers--Sharon

I bought DH a nice bottle of wine and some lemoncillo for a lemoncillo martini (that was after work...and it was well worth waiting for!) now, the BBQ is firing up and we will have steak and ceasar salad for dinner. Bought coffee gift cards for the 2 kids still living at home and the dogs get a treat and an extra long walk later this evening.
At work, the case I was supposed to testify against, reached a mediated agreement; I got great parking and no rush hour traffic to get to the tribunal court; received a cheque in the mail from the dental insurance company and had a wine order arrive ....
What a great day!![]()
Not that a little box of sparkle and twinkle would not have made me happy but I'm just as happy with a nice meal

Happy Valentine's to all!

We are going to Maui for a wedding this weekend so I told my DH that our trip is also a V-day present to eachother.
