I posted before about trying to decide what to do with my original .81 ct engagement diamond. AFter 11 years my husband gave me a gift of a much larger stone and I was going to make this into a pendant. but my 88 year old grandma told me no because she had a 1.25 ct solitaire pendant that she was going to will to me but she gave it to me instead. She said after hearing I wanted a pedant she decided that it would be more fun to give it to me and see me enjoy it instead of me getting it at her death. Go grandma :) Yeah grandma!

Anyway so back to what to do with my .81ct diamond. Its not the best cut but its a pretty stone. I was thinking of buying another .81ct and making earrings. My husband said OK if thats what I want then it will be this years birthday, anniversary gift and hannukah all rolled into one so don''t ask or expect any more gift this year. Sounds reasonable to me!

So, do you all think that .81ct each ear is too large for everyday? I have big earlobes and am quite tall and am wondering if I can pull it off. I''m 37 and not a a newlywed and my husband is older than me and has a very good professional job. I have a really nice house in a wealthy suburb. I''m not saying those things to brag but to get an idea of my lifestyle so I think those stones would "fit".

But I''m still wondering if they would be too big. I do have smaller studs I wear a lot and really like them.

Not too big in my opinion at all! I think as you are tall etc they will be a great size. What a lovely Grandma too and a nice dilemma for you! I say do it

Yes it is a good dilemma to have :) Oh and my ring that I ended up settling on is 1.63ct AGS000 cut so the earrings would not compete with or outside the ring.

Actually, here is the really cool thing about grandma''s pendant. My grandma was married to my grandpa and they divorced when I was a small child. She married another wonderful man who then became another grandpa to me.

The diamond in the pendant is her original stone that her first husband (my grandpa) gave her! How super cool is that!! I love diamonds with history :)

If you are concerned that the .81 ct may be too large and you say it is not a good cut, why not look into getting it repolished?

Yes this will cost you something but you will save money when you buy a smaller diamond for its match.

Does any pro here know if this makes sense, or is a private party cutting one stone going to end up being cost-prohibitive?

Another consideration, if this .81 has incusions near the girdle you may end up with a higher clarity after repolishing.

Its a VVS1 stone so inclusions are not an issue. By not great cut I mean not an AGS 000 or comparable. Its still a pretty stone. REcutting is interesting but I think my husband would be upset if I did that. Its one thing to reset or engagment stone and he is all for that. But if I start cutting it I know he would flip. And I can't say I blame him. And the jeweler I spoke to told me that matching the color and size and cut are important however, no need to waste my money on a VVS1, we will look for a VS1 or VS2 for the matching stone.

definitely not too big! go for it!

I think it''s a great size go for it!!!

Actually...that''s my dream size for earrings! Perfect!

.81 per ear is a great size! I say go for it!

For me, you could double or triple that size before I would say "stop, too big!"

Sounds great to me!

Definately not too big. Actually, I think that''s a real nice size for earrings.

Not at all! They sound great, and you can carry it off. How wonderful of your grandmother to give you the pendant while she can see you enjoying it! That is so great!

To big? Not.. Go for it, It''s a good size.

I love that your Grandma gave you a stone before she didn''t need it anymore. I plan on doing the same for my grand daughter.. Every time I buy jewelry I tease, look what I bought Ella..

I have had a 1.5 tcw pair of studs for almost 10 years and I''m starting to experience DSS now!

I think yours will be perfect! Not too big at all!!!

i don't think they will be too big at all...the only thing i would foresee maybe being an issue is finding a 'good match' to your e-ring stone...depending on how it is cut...it might be hard to find a match. is it well-cut? if not then you don't want an okay cut in one ear, and some new H&A in the other ear..hehee.

0.81 in each ear will look beautiful. I don''t think they''ll be too big for everyday wear either. I just bought a pair of 2.25 cttw for everyday wear...and I''m totally a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. I think you''ll love them!

Certainly not too big. I have 2.5 carat total weight studs that I wear everyday and I am only 5'' 2" tall, but I do have large earlobes.

I have .75 in each ear and love that size! What a perfect solution to make a pair or earrings out of it! And ironically, I am also leaning toward a new 1.63 ct. diamond! We''ll almost be diamond twins, except I don''t have the pendant!

NOOOO! That is not too big. Sounds just about right to me.

I wear my 2.3 ctw studs every day and have grown to feel naked without them. I hope you can find a good match to make those earrings- or maybe it could go in a bezel for a sophisticated, stunning ankle bracelet?

I think .81 in each ear is a great size -- not too large at all. I made the mistake of trying on 1 carat in each ear and loved the look, so now I am dreaming of upgrading my 1/2 carat earrings to 3/4 in each ear (2 ctw was just too much $).

Definately go for it! They would be too large for my lifestyle, but they sound like they''d fit in perfectly with yours. I''m hoping to get .25 in each ear someday...

Thanks for the replies! I am going to do it! I have decided that the matching stone will be laser inscribed. A lot of the newer GIA stones are but its my understanding if its not, it is not too hard to do. I want to laser inscribe both that was I can tell which diamond is which without having to go to a gemologist to identify them!

I''''ll keep you all updated :)

That sounds like a good idea.

Are you going to try and match the cut of the original stone (by eye/looks) or go for something ideally cut?

.81 is definitely not too big. It''s perfect.

I wear 2ctw studs on really small earlobes, and I love them. Okay, mine are not real diamonds, they are from high quality sims, but no one has ever questioned me because they know I''m diamond-crazy and would sacrifice vacations etc to have nice jewelry. I even had these mounted in platinum because I have sensitive ears, and can''t wear white gold because of the alloy! I''m 33 and of moderate income...if that makes any difference
