Hi everyone,
A vendor sent me a GIA Certificate of an SI1. Can you guys tell me what these inclusions mean and is this a good or bad ring to buy? It has XXX cut, D colour, None-Fluoroescent. Thanks guys for your help!

It''s really too hard to tell on a plot like that IMO. I am the proud owner of an SI2, so I am ALL about SI clarity, believe me, but just make sure a trustworthy vendor is giving you a very honest opinion of the inclusions if you aren''t going to see it in person, you don''t want any surprises

.

On another note, do you have crown and pavilion angles of the stone? I ask because I learned the hard way, GIA ex, ex, ex does not by itself ensure a great cut. Just be sure to get the details, and preferable an idealscope image.

Thanks for your help. The vendor that I''m buying from is pretty safe. I am going to view it this weekend at DCLA....(they are to verify its authenticity. I have attached the certificate this time. Can you tell me more. I appreciate your time.

I am new to the whole diamond world so my comments are from what I''ve learned so far.

The look of the diamond to the paper are sometimes night and day. Definitely see the diamond before purchasing or buy from someone you trust if you aren''t seeing it.

I''ve shopped and inspected a good amount of diamonds so far and am learning quickly that a GIA certificate can be way off compared to the brilliance of a stone and how it looks overall.

Yes, I am definitely seeing it this weekend. What can I look for?

Looks like it has the potential of being a very nice SI1.

I don't see any red flags at all.

As this SI1 grade is determined by scattered inclusions (as opposed to one larger inclusion), you'll probably be surprised how clean it looks under a loupe.

Let us know what you think once you've viewed it.

Thanks Richard for your advise. It''s much appreciated. I will let you all know once I''ve viewed it.

As for cut, it scores a 3 on the HCA. If it were me, I''d rather find a better cut stone, even if that meant dropping in color (but seeing as how you''re starting at D, you have PLENTY of room in that department without sacrificing beauty).

Mmm....I''m new to this whole ring thing...so I was wondering if HCA is reliable? I live in Australia so the independent grader would be DCLA. Could you tell me more about HCA? Thanks.

Oops....I just realised HCA is Australia based....thanks for that anyway.

The HCA seems to be reliable, but to some extent it''s personal choice where to set the threshold. Some will only accept a score of <2. Others may be willing to go up to 2.5-3. You should try to compare your diamond to an AGS0 if you can. And make it a stringent comparison test by viewing them in all sorts of lighting.

There is a whole page about the HCA, but one really important to remember is that it is intended to be a rejection tool, not a selection tool. In other words, if you have three stones that score 1.2, 1.8, and 3.5, you could use the score to eliminate the 3.5, but it wouldn''t necessarily help you choose between the 1.2 and the 1.8.

If you are buying a RB, the HCA is one of the most valuable tools out there.

The pavilion angle is well mached by the crown angle.
If Garry decides to do HCA2 this one would move up and likely be under 2 depending on the exact c/p angles.
Within the GIA rounding it could drop under 2 in the current HCA.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I will get an independent grader to do a report and see it for myself. I will let you all know how it goes.

as Rich says - this is an honest SI1.
You can try to be too clever by interpreting graders dots on a piece of paper. If there were less marked I would be more worried.

Thanks Garry. I am now very hopeful that this diamond is the one for me. We''ll just to wait and see.

Hi everyone,

I went to DCLA and got the diamond verified....Extremely happy with it...except for one little thing....I was able to see the feather inclusion under the special light with my own eyes. Fortunately, the feather was on the side so it looked like it was part of the cut. When I brought it out to the normal light, I couldn''t see it. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for an SI1? I really like it as it has lots of sparkle and whiteness.

The SI1 grade should usually be eyeclean under average lighting conditions viewed 12 to 15 inches from the eye by a viewer with average (good) eyesight, who has not located the inclusions beforehand under magnification.

Some people will circumvent this process by finding the inclusion beforehand, then draw a bead on it from six inches away under powerful transmitted light and then consequently deem it as "eye visible", when that is really not the case under normal viewing circumstances.

you could always enquire it is possible to mount the stone in such a way that that inclusion is hidden under a prong, so that there is no chance of seeing it

Thank you so much everybody for your input. I''ve learnt alot from you guys. Overall, I am extremely happy with this diamond.
