Are the cushions with 8 main pavillions the chunky cut ones?

I think I''v heard this but I was thinking ones with less pavillions (4 or 6) would have the larger facets.

Mostly all of the "true" antique cushions I have come across with has the 8 pavilion mains so yes, I would say so.

Well, some "modern"cushion cuts, like mine also have the 8 main pavilions. They are chunky,but not as chunky as the traditional OMC.

Chunky faceted cushions can come in both 8 and 4 and I''ve seen the appearance in both cushion and cushion modified (although less so in the "modified" varieties).

I really would love for them to make new old miners - open culet, high crown & all.

Hi Sonoma,

To answer your question above, I actually met with a diamond dealer 2 weeks ago in the hopes of getting antique-style, chunky cushions cut. The cutter explained to us that given a choice to cut a modern RB and a cushion, they will always choose to cut the RB for financial reasons. RBs (the well-cut ones) are guaranteed to sell and will always command a premium over other cuts, no matter how popular a particular cut may be.

Having said that, I also came away from the meeting (where there were at least a dozen cushions in front of me, both old cuts and new cuts) realizing that as LOVELY as modern cut cushions are, I will always be drawn to the imperfections of the old cuts. You know - the larger culet, the warmish tint, the slightly off shape - all things that charm my pants off.

BUT, that's just me - I happen to be nuts that way

Why do you think that is? Is it because we are exposed to so many beautiful cushions on PS and a typical consumer won''t see them at a B&M?

I remember I asked for a specific look in a cushion and was told it was really rare. I was like .. but I just saw 3 like that on PS within the last month! Sometimes I wonder if we are too spoiled by PS!

I find that so very sad, so very sad, so very sad. Thank you for asking them, though. At least it''s a start. Maybe if they hear it more often . . .

I do understand that very well. Even though I''ve been looking at old stones for a long time I''ve not been able to find The Right One at the right price.

Actually, I just saw something on GOG that they are working on a cut that has the best of the OMC and the new modern cut cushions. Very interesting. I can''t find the link right now, but anyone else know what I''m talking about?

Please DO NOT BE SAD. Somewhere out there is a diamond with your name on it. It may take some time to find it, but it will eventually find YOU. It may be an antique, it may be a modern cushion. I think that you will know when you see it

The diamond from OWD that you posted is pretty! Nice, elongated cushion goodness - and the kozibe effect is always nice and one that I particularly enjoy seeing. Here is something similar (not for sale - this is soon to be on its way to a lovely lady in Singapore). This is a 3ct N color antique cushion - same shape.

Oh - and the modern cut cushion from GOG is gorgeous too!!!!

I bet, Charmy. My question, though, is how a "new" cut is gotten into the mainstream diamond market (mall type customer)? How did the princess get there and take hold?

Spoiled is one side of the coin. The side I prefer is that the mainstream customers be brought up to speed.

I can''t get that GOG link to work or find that area. GOG has two really nice chunky ones right now. One is a 2 ct. and one is a 3 ct.

Grace: Thanks for the eye candy. It''s spectacular. You are right, one day it will find me (with the help of me perusing GOG and Erica Grace). It will be like the OWD one but a bit more square and with flourescence.

Question: Do you find more flourescent (med. - very strong) stones in antique cuts or modern ones? (I have a flourescence fetish.)

For some reason, it intrigues/fascinates me that stones can possess the property to flouresce (sp?). I can't put it into words any better than that. I guess the whiter is nice, also. I have an interest in stones with inclusions, too (although do not like lots of them in diamonds).
