OK, just musing here....

I have an e-ring upgrade in progress and my center stone has been put into a pendant. Now the cut was never that great, it was a nice stone, but no triple 0 or anything, no hearts and arrows, etc, and while it looked lovely as a ring, it looks unbelievable as a pendant.

I cant figure it out, it is like a whole different stone. So any logic there any cut specfiications (for rounds) that are preferred if it is a penant?, or just me falling in love with the look of my new pendant?

thanks in advance

What is the spec on your old ering stone? Would you elaborate a bit on why you do not like it as a ring and why you think it looks great as a pendant? For example, please use descriptive words such as brightness, contrast, and etc..

Didn''t you send this stone to Brian for recut? Do you mind sharing the results?

Hope you do not mind me being nosy. I am curious, because I have a similar situation as you. Just wonder about how everyone''s decision process is like. Provide only what you feel comfortable sharing.

Fancydiamond.... it is only a .34 c stone, F/G colour SI1 clarity, - it just seems to sparkle more, maybey the bezel setting helps it, I dont know, it shimmers and catches the light more, it just is bright and shiny. It has a whole new lease of life. Maybey the setting is more suitable for it - i dont know.

the specs are ... well, remember pre PS, and all we asked about is size and color

- and it was a long time ago. But it always was a pretty and I got heaps of compliments on the ring over the years, now the stone looks just amazing - no recut or anything.

depth 64.3
table 61.1
crown angle 35
pavilion angel 42.5
cutlet 0.9
girdle - thick
star/upper ratio: 60:40
Lower girdle halves 81%

well, there are the numbers, my poor stone

- I feel like I am exposing it amongst the pricescope cut fanatics (which is a club I have now happily joined

)

anyway, whatever the reason, I am very happy it works so well as a penant.

Ohh, and I do have some lovely .33 carat each ACA studs, which I love - so it is not as if I havnt stared at my lovley ACA''s - I love them and can see the arrows etc -

Yes absolutely, shallower proportioned stones can make super pendants as they look bright and brilliant when worn on the neck, whereas if worn in a ring these diamonds can often suffer from obstruction - this is where the diamond visibly darkens at close scrutiny due to the observer's head/ body blocking the light to the stone. In a pendant this is obviously not an issue!
The HCA is a good tool to play around with if you want to learn more on this, generally these types of diamonds will score below 1 on the HCA, you can read more on thishere.

Your stone doesn't come under shallow specifications but it is entirely possible that as you are viewing your diamond differently in a pendant that it looks better under these conditions - congrats on your new piece!

What kind of pendant setting is it?

She said bezel.

D2B,
Thank you kindly for providing the spec of your diamond. Seems like a winner for a pendant.

I know how you feel about showing a "non-ideal" diamond here. You should see mine. It is a classic "no-no". Other than being severely asymmetric, my diamond has everything bad that you can think of, e.g., fish-eye, and everything else. In fact, it is so bad that I can use it as a great example to teach people what NOT to buy.

If there is a thread about "show me your worst diamond", my diamond will definitely wins.

I know I read it, but can''t be sure... Now notice it is on the other reply.

I am thinking maybe the jeweler notice the make of the stone and polish the inside of the bezel. That is the only thing I can think off, usually a bezel will be a bad choice for that kind of cut.

You know, I guess at the end of the day, whatever the numbers, the bezel setting works for this stone, who knows why, but it looks beautiful.

I guess a reminder when possible to be able to look at diamonds and not let numbers do all the talking, and that different settings do different things for diamonds.

Enjoy your stone. :) If it works it works.

FanyDiamond,

What are you planning to do with your stone? what setting is it in now?

We should have thread entiteld " imperfect beauties" for the beautiful stones that defy number logic

Nothing. The stone will stay in its original setting and be given to a 10-year old girl who will appreciate it. It was given to me by someone who could not afford expensive extravagance and knew nothing about diamonds. It is of such low value that anything I do with it will cost me more than its worth.

At this stage of my life, I keep my collection light and simple, but each piece must be gorgeous enough that my heirs will fight for it after I die.
