My fiancee has a round brilliant stone in her e-ring. We''re looking for a wedding band that will complement it. A jeweler said that an eternity ring of princesses is essentially the same cut (albeit square - we''re learned a thing or two from this website). I know there have been discussions about this sort of thing (somewhat difficult to search); my question is - in your opinion(s) what cut should the stones of an eternity band be to look attractive with a RB solitaire (in a pave setting)?

Many thanks.

Why not use really poor cut off color heavily included rounds and save some money?

Same effect.

Mount Pleasant Boy,

I think (at least, I hope) Garry's sarcasm is directed not at you, but at the jeweler who told you princesses and round brilliants were basically the same. They're not. They're basically quite different. I would not mix them, but then, I don't like the look of princesses at all. But some people do, and some people like to mix them. It's a matter of preference. Pop your head into a jewelry store, take a look, and see what you think.

Ditto Glitterata. I wouldn't mix the two shapes, but that's just me. Jenibear (a forum member) has an e-ring that has a princess center stone, with rounds on the side, and it looks lovely.

With the type of setting you've described for your fiancee's e-ring, I'd probably go for a thin, pave eternity band.

I would go for the pave band - the princesses just wouldn't work.

If the e-ring was a round with princesses on the sides a princess band would make more sense.

Though not everyone would do it, as canadiangrrl said my e-ring is a mix of the two and gets multiple compliments daily. It's all about personal preference.
I think if you did use princesses they would have to be the best cut possible to get the best sparkle!

Good luck!

Actually, I would see at least one good reason to get a channel-set band with PS cuts near a RBC e-ring. The square princesses do not leave gaps between them in the setting so you get a nice even circle of sparkle-impossible to achieve with round stones. In such a band, the shape of the individual 'pieces' that make up the pave does not matter that much, since individual stones do not show after all. The match with the RBC should be great. That the PS is 'sort of square round', well, not really. It may be true that the princess cut was made to acheive the sparkle of the rounds in a square stone, but that happened a long time ago and now squares closer to the RBC cut are available (if you ask which, the standard answer of Pricescope will probably be "the Regent" and that's probably right anyway).

Do squares and rounds work well together? Well, it is a classical combination that cna work wanders if ballanced well. Do Princes cuts look nice near rounds? Sure. For all this, seing is believing: there are no hard 'fashion rules' against this mix (if against any).

Hope this helps.

Small princess diamonds can be very sparkly. I have an invisible set ring of prins and bags that just flashes with light and fire. But, all the diamonds are small.

Val makes a good point too that princess cuts will fit together better in a channel setting.

The suggestions to pop into some jewelery stores and look is a very good idea. Have a sales person "lend" you a RB e-ring to compare with various styles of bands. Once you've seen side by side comparisons, you'll have a better idea of what appeals to you.

I think that you could buy her a matching band with rounds all around, I have seen them .it seems as though the jeweler didnot have it in stock and tried to push the square cuts?

Thanks for all the help. Indeed, the salesman - at a very posh jewelry shop in London - would have sold us anything we liked, which, indeed, is the way capitalism works...

I think you're all right, no fashion rules, but it might not look so good, we should try them on, and RB do not equate to princesses!

Our only other concern is that she, my fiance, plays tennis year- round twice a week and has a two hand backhand...so any eternity ring might get a bit more play than it anticipated....
