Are platinum prongs necessary?? Any opinions??

Here is a question for all the experts out there...

The setting I am planning to purchase currently has 14K white gold prongs (6-prong style). Do you think it is necessary to replace the gold prongs with platinum?? I would go with the 6-prong style in plat....is this overkill? Will the 14K gold be safe-enough??

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated
