Are LGDs prone to breakage when mounting?

I am getting ready to order a stone from Frank Darling and then send it to James Allen to be put into the full bezel setting.
James Allen states LGD's are prone to breakage? Is this true or simply a disclaimer type of statement to discourage me from
asking them to mount a stone from outside their realm? Is this worth it or should I keep trying to get a stone from JA? JA's stones are pricey.
Thanks again.

I've never heard that they are prone to breakage. They are a diamond. However, when I traded in my earth grown diamond, the jeweler mentioned that they can chip sometimes when setting/resetting. I had already had that diamond reset once before, and apparently it did have a small chip. I don't know whether that chip came from the reset I had previously done, or when the jeweler removed it from my setting for the trade in, but it can happen.

I would just have your stone set by the same vendor. I have seen some photos of the Frank Darling bezels and they look well done. I'd save myself the hassle.

Um no? That is weird. Unless its included heavily or near an edge.

But in any case I have two bezel set LGD from Frank Darling and I have never seen a bezel done so well. Why don't you get the setting from them?

I agree. Just get the setting made by Frank darling

Lab grown diamonds are diamonds, with the same physical and optical properties as Earth grown diamonds. We have not yet sold or mounted many of them, but I have not heard of any such issues. I do know the ones we have mounted and sold have not given us any issues.

I also know when they are cut correctly, they are absolutely stunning!

Barnlady, I second (or third) what others have said here re Frank Darling doing the bezel setting if you are getting the diamond from them. The have some beautiful bezel settings and are very easy to work with. It will also be a lot easier to deal with one vendor and I would also assume that FD would not have the same disclaimer in case of breakage as it's not an outside stone.

Jax I just love their bezel designs, actually all of their designs and the workmanship looks spot on. I bought a 2 carat diamond from them in one of their flash sales and unfortunately (for me!) got them to send me the loose stone while I thought about settings! When the time came to set, it proved too hard to send the stone back as I am based outside US! Lesson learnt! I will eventually get one of their rings though!

No. This is a sales issue.

That said, you may want to stick with one vendor anyway. Setting an outside diamond, meaning one that wasn’t sold by the setter, usually isn’t covered by the warranty of either company, while setting a stone purchased from the sAmerican company usually is.

IIRC, a few years back GIA said that MMD were more prone to damage than earth mined. While they are the same, the different growth method was believed to be the cause. That said, all diamonds are incredibly hard and I don’t believe it should be an issue *if* true. I have not seen anything about this from GIA, or other reputable sources, in the past couple of years.

I'm actually surprised that JA will accept outside stones and I can't help but feel they said that to put you off using their services or buying one of their stones. As others have said, perhaps look at getting a FD setting?

I have never heard of this from any consumer in recent years.

Frank Darling has some beautiful bezel or half bezel designs. I love the swirl neck on his bezel’s, which are very unique.

I would get the ring made by him so you have lifetime maintenance on the whole ring. He really does beautiful work.
