I''m shockingly new to this whole diamond thing... but getting engaged and turning 50 in the same year (yikes).

Just from lurking and reading it seems that a 1 ct stone will about max out the budget - not that there''s anything wrongwith a 1 ct diamond! I love emerald an Asscher cuts, but I''m wondering if other cuts are overall less expensive AND if slipping into a K color is less conspicuous with other cuts. I think I remember hearing somewhere that emeralds and Asschers were not as forgiving. I don''t even see any K color emeralds or Asschers at Whiteflash.

I hate to sound greedy - but I really like some bling for the buck, without being too tacky. No one *I* know is going to whip out a loupe and examine my ring.

Does a stone of this quality make you wince (in a bad way)?

Rounds are the most forgiving of color, but also the most expensive (but not by much). The good thing is that they have a great spread.

For the most size bang for your buck ovals, marquise, and pears are your best bet. But they don't hide color as well as rounds...so you'll have to figure out which one is more important to you!

ETA: No, that stone doesn't necessarily make me wince, but you need a LOT more information to purchase a fancy cut like an oval than you do with rounds. Also be forewarned that the color will likely be quite warm, which is ok for some but not for others. It's a personal preference.

Thanks, neatfreak

My preference is for a white metal setting (although I''m looking into black gold) and I imagine the warmth would only be accentuated by that.

I really have a lot of a lot to learn...

Ok will you please translate your Latin?--Google hasn''t helped at all and I am tired of looking!

Good luck on finding your diamond--I''m too much of a newbie to help except to say I got my diamond (RB)at WF and love it--but I love ovals, too and I think you get more coverage with those but more problems with bow-ties? Call WF they will be honest about telling you how it looks and yu have 10 days to return.

If you''re interested in working with WhiteFlash I''d give them a call and see what they recommend.

GoodOldGold has the most fancy shapes with pictures and all the info of any of the vendors I know of. Example:

1.24 H VS1 asscher

Or if you get the hearts and arrows bug you can get something like this: 1.26 K SI1 H&A

Good luck!

Some fancy shapes can be less expensive, some think that Asschers and EC''s can show more colour than a round diamond, but it depends on individual colour preferences.

A good way to get your bang for the buck is to consider SI clarities and a lower colour if you like the look, a SI clarities need to be judged on a case by case basis by your vendor as not all are eyeclean, however many are. In a fancy shape this grade may need careful evaluation as fancy shapes may show inclusions more readily than rounds, however they are well worth looking into!

Good choices for best bang for the buck are pears, marquise and oval shapes, these can look large for their carat weight. A good way of going about this is to contact some vendors as the others have mentioned such as Whiteflash, Jon at Good old Gold, Mark at Engagement Rings Direct, tell them what you are looking for and use their expertise. Fancy shapes need to be judged by the eyes to determine beauty, the numbers don''t tell the full story.
