Not trying to steal from another thread, but I have been thinking (now that I''m better educated) that I would like a better cut stud earring (oh Santa.......I''ve been a really good boy this year!). I currently have a pretty crappy cut .3 carat in white gold. I will only wear one earring. (PS Vendors: If you see this, do you sell single studs for men?)

Anyway, the size I currently have is probably just fine, and would look much better if it was nicely cut, but I was wondering if your husbands, boyfriends, male acquaintances wear studs? And if they do what size do they wear? I know some ladies sometimes use a formula, based on their e-ring center stone size, but that wouldn''t work for many men. So.........what size do you think is appropriate for a man to wear?

Thanks...........

I would not go larger than .50. I think a .50 ideal cut would look amazing! I''m sure you could buy a loose stone and have it mounted no problem. That way you could pick your stone yourself. When I see large diamonds on a man''s ears I think rapper wannabe. Sorry but I do.

If you have a medium to large lobe, .50 would be really noticiable but tasteful!

At 51 years old and a senior manager with a major staffing firm, I truly want to avoid the "rapper wannabe" look!! LOL

Thanks for the advice asssherisme. I hope the folks from say GOG or Whiteflash will chime in about whether they sell single studs?

Thanks again!

I think .50 would be perfect :)

Have you thought about backing type? I once had screws years ago and they tore up my ear. I was afraid of friction to losing them. I recently bought a .81 diamond to go with a .81 I already had and I went with lapousette backs. Comfort like a friction back but it snaps on and can''t come off unless you unlock it. They are made by Stuller. I am VERY happy with my choice. Comfortable and secure.

In my opinion you could go .75 carat to 1.0 carat without being over the top. I don''t start thinking rapper-wanna-be until about 1.5 carats!!!

After losing so many backs to the shower (I uses a mesh scrubber when I shower), I went with the screw post and haven''t had any issues since. I think because my experience with screw posts has been so positive, I''d probably stick with that. But thanks for the advice...........

Funny. I suppose that might be geographic. I think in lil ''ol Tampa, FL., that size might be a tad large (though I have seen some of the Tampa Buccaneers wearing some pretty large blingy studs. But they also tend to wear some pretty large blingy necklaces too! LOL

I think 1 ct or below would be O.K. on a man.

Thanks Lizz.......

I think .50 is a nice size, not small and not too big. I''d buy the loose stone from a PS vendor and have them set it in a screwback for you. Or perhaps they do sell a single stud?? But haven''t heard of that before. Sure is a good idea, hint hint PS vendors.

Thanks Lisa............I will probably stick with no larger than .5 carats, but I want it to be really well cut.

Thanks also for the hint hint. It would be interesting to know if any PS Vendors sell single studs??

PS: Saw your dental woes. So glad you are doing better. Your dentist sounds like a nice guy! Had to laugh about the gift basket. My dentist sends me a pound of Godiva every Christmas and I get such a kick out of it. I mean, movie tickets, a gift certificate to a health food store, would be OK. But candy from your dentist? Too funny.

Hello Rod, I befriended a nice lady(Sylvia) who works @a pawn shop and she knows how I like jewelry, so she gave me National Jeweler Magazine. On page 36, remembered this article. I''ve scanned it, because it has a pic, plus attaching a link to NJ article. It''s just another option.

Hey Thanks for the pic and link. Look's like a pretty cool setup!!

To me a half carat would be the largest I''d go. I might aim for 40 points or something around those lines. A friend had a 0.44 ct princess stud and I think it woulda looked better a little smaller, IMO.

Thanks and I''ll likely not go over .4. I''m not planning to spend a fortune on this either. So, I''ll just get the best cut stud I can find in my price range, which will probably keep me below 40 points anyway.

Thanks

i think around .40 is perfect. have you looked at the wf expert selection? you could absolutely get one diamond set in your choice of setting (and it would be upgradeable!

OK Rod - Guilty confession time.

Back when I joined the trade a pack of my former students had me nearly talked me into getting a stud. I showed them several options. They all thought 5.10 mm (.50 ct) was best.

My lady shook her head and told me I'd look like a pirate, so I waved off the idea. She wins for now, but I admit I still think about doing it...and buying a parrot.

Hi Honey. I'm home. Yarr.

At least it''s not a hoop earring, matey.

OK, I just got home from errands and stopped at Starbucks for a drink. The guy who made my coffee had a diamond stud. I examined it and decided I thought it was too big. It was probably about .75ct. But his earlobe was tiny. So I think .40-.45 would be perfect.

OK, Rod, I am a total GEEK and did this just for you! I took one of my studs (.45) and had DH hold it up to his ear, and it looked like a GREAT size! Being super ideal cut, it sparkled from edge to edge and really made a nice presence. Now whether or not your earlobes are even remotely similar to his, well, of course I have no idea. But FWIW, I think that would be a PERFECT size!

And PS, John, your post made me LOL!!! I almost lost my laptop!!!

But John.......Don''t you have a responsibility to your business to demonstrate the best of your product in public??? I mean come on.........shouldn''t you be wearing a ''honkin nice ring and shouldn''t you have a fabulously cut stud?? It''s like selling Mercedes Benz automobiles, but riding a bicycle???? LOL

Still, you didn''t answer my question. What''s Whiteflash policy on selling single studs? Can I choose a Ready Set stud??

Thanks Matey!!!!!

Thanks Lynn!!! I probably will stick with the .4 size range. It''s just got to be really really nicely cut. Not like the cloudy piece of crap I currently have.

Thanks asscherisme...........I don''t want to end up looking like my mother (LOL), so I won''t go that large. I think there is a point in which a stud in a man''s ear becomes too noticeable. Too look at me. And I don''t want to be in that league.

Everyone''s help with this is much appreciated.

John, I''ll have to admit, I''m with your gf. I just don''t like earrings on men, period.

I love ya anyway, Rod, but I just had to help out John''s gf!

Aw thanks!!!! I love ya as well, but I will sport a nicely cut stud none-the-less!!!

I think it depends on the man. Some men can carry it off. Some can''t. My husband would be a can''t man. My brother on the other hand could.

I don''t like the trend of piecering both ears on men though. Just a single ear.

OK, getting off track.

Have you seen Puff Daddy, AKA, Sean Combs, AKA, Diddy, or whatever name he is going with this week? He has both ears pierced and sports some honking HUGE rocks in his ears. Now thats a look I don''t think would fit into what you are looking for :)

Anyway, have fun shopping!!

Couldn''t agree more on that. I will, promise, never have the other ear pierced. And I surely don''t want the P Diddy or as you said whatever he goes by, look!!!

And I''ll be one who is very much looking foward to seeing it, Rod! As asscherisme said, I think some men wear them well and some would look funny. I am sure with your sense of style you will wear it well! I shouldn''t have been so restrictive in my original comment.

Don't feel bad at all. And, I'm not sure whether I'm one of those men who look's good with a stud or not, but I am a diamaholic and it's just another way I can satisfy my love of bling!!!

Plus, since I do have this hole in my ear, I may as well plug it with something well cut, don't you think??
