Hello all, I''m sure these questions have come up before and please excuse me if I am asking this again, I do not want to step on any toes, but can someone tell me the following:

1) What is an "independent" appraiser?
2) How good is IGI in doing appraisals?
3) Any recommendations for a good appraiser in NYC?
4) Would anyone recommend laser etching?

Thanks to all!!!

Independent: appraiser does not buy or sell.

No idea. Since it''s a GIA stone, I have no idea why you''d want IGI to do it, though. I think of them more as a lab. Usually, an appraiser can function like a lab, but a lab may not be able to function like an appraiser.

You can search the board for NYC appraiser.

Hi! Thanks for replying so quickly!

I don''t understand, what do you mean by saying "Since it''s a GIA stone, I have no idea why you''d want IGI to do it..."? It is a GIA stone, but labs like IGI are no good? What does a lab and an appraiser do differently?

Thanks again much for the help!

I don't know how IGI appraisals work, but IGI graded diamonds trade below GIA diamonds.

When I think of a lab, I think they provide color, clarity, carat weight, dimensions, table, depth, girdle, symmetry, polish, crown and pavilion heights (angles if they have Sarins.)

An appraiser provides all of that, the better ones have something about light performance or cut quality, and market valuation.

Wow I did not know that "IGI graded diamonds trade below GIA diamonds"! Thanks for letting me know that! I will do a search for an independent appraiser then on the boards! Thanks again!
