Appraiser says side stones are from same "host"

When my appraiser was looking at my 3 stone ring, he mentioned that the sides were from the same host stone. Very interesting, but who cares, was my thought. Here is the question I didn''t ask - how did he know that???

Most likely it's because there is some inclusion or other internal feature that appears in both stones, perhaps as a mirror image such that it's obvious the feature was sawn down the middle.

It does happen, and the stones sometimes stay together. I've seen it on rare occasions.

As I recall, the laser inscribed numbers on these 2 stones follow in sequential order - could that provide an explanation?

no that only means that more than likely they were sent too the lab by the same company at the same time.
