Appraise right after purchasing? Common to do this?

I am just about done purchasing the diamond I have chosen from a personal diamond seller. He will be providing an appraisal report and I want to have the diamond appraised on my own as well.

Question, how do people usually go about this process? Can the diamond still be appraised if it is set into a ring?

I just want to make sure the diamond I bought is the diamond that is on paper, etc. It is obviously the same since the inclusions are in the exact marked spots, but I want to be sure.

Comments on how to go about this process?

there are some tests that cant be ran on a set stone but verification of value and that the stone matches the paperwork and an aprox. verification of what the paperwork says is possible.
Color and weight is the hardest to verify and sometimes clarity if an inclusion is put under a prong.
A good appraiser is used too doing this and can get close.
The weight will be verified using a formula based on measurements not as accurate as on an unset stone and can be off a little. (unset it would just be weighed)
Since color is graded from the bottom and the setting can interfere with the grading it too can be off.
But overall the grading on the report can be classified as being reasonable and the stone matched too the report on a set stone.

Thanks for the feedback.

That all makes sense, glad it can be done.

I am buying from a personal diamond seller so I doubt he would try to do anything shady or put his reputation on the line for a skimpy few bucks. I will however have it appraised anyhow just because I''ve put so much time and effort in, I want to be sure I am getting everything I am hoping for.
