Hi all

I just had a diamond appraised by one of the appraisers listed here. I spend about half a hour with the appraiser. During that time all he did is confirm the 4c and nothing else. Is this right? I thought the appraisal would consist of using different gadgets, not only to confimr the 4c, but to tell you more information¡£ Should i sent the diamond to a different appraiser?

Thanks

Hi Meimei, it depends on what you want out of this appraisal. Some people just want to verify that the diamond is the one they are paying for and get a paper for insurance purposes. Some appraisers provide more information about the stones.

You should communicate with your appraiser before setting up an appointment and make her/him aware about what you''re looking for.

see e.g. "Asscher Appraisal: Left Disappointed"

Meimei,

An hour and a half to confirm a lab grading report on a single stone is a pretty long session. Were you present during the appraisal? What did they spend the time doing? Did they produce a written report?

Hi Neil, I understood that Meimei spent 1/2 an hour with her appraiser.

That''s all right

Do you think 30 min is ok for a basic appraisal, Neil? And what is the minimum information consumers should expect from the basic appraisal of a diamond and/or ring?

30 minutes is quite fast. It''s usually sufficient for a ''certificate matching'' type service but I would not describe this service as an appraisal and I don''t do these for the general public (I’ll do it for diamond dealers for their own use when they’re concerned that their inventory may have been shuffled). The problem is exactly what is being discussed here. Even when people think that the only issue is whether the stone matches the lab report, they almost always end up needing more than that. It simply doesn’t serve my customers needs to offer this abbreviated a service. With every appraisal session I start out by asking the client what it is that they hope to learn during the session and how this information will be helpful to them. I will then make a point to provide both the answers to what they are asking and to provide whatever information I can that will be useful for their purpose but that they didn’t know to ask. A simple certificate matching never meets that standard. Most of my appraisals involve an interview and inspection session with the client that lasts an hour or two followed by whatever is required in the way or research and report writing.

I believe that each appraisal situation is different. The amount of time that it takes to complete an appraisal varies from client to client.
The main emphasis should be providing the client with the information that is requested by the client. Of course, questions will arise and they should
be answered by the appraiser during the session. At the end of every session, I ask "Do you have any additional questions?" and if you think of any later please feel free to call me or e-mail me at no additional charge. Doctors, accountants and lawyers see clients based on their needs and the amount of time that it takes to complete the assignment varies. No one should ever feel rushed. I feel that most appraisers share their knowledge openly and don''t charge for every minute of time.

Hi All

thanks for replying. The most important thing that i want to confirm is whether or not the diamond sparkles, ie: light performance. Should I sent the diamond to someone else? or should I have the appraiser relook at it? I was expecting the appraiser to shown the diamond under various light conditions and tell me how it performs.

thanks
