I have a couple of questions about appraisals.

1. I have a ring picked out at Jared (The Galleria of Jewlery) and I have narrowed my diamond section down. The diamond is not going to come from Jared, but I''m going to have them put them together. Should I get an appraisal on just the loose diamond and another on just the ring? Or have the two put together and then get an appraisal on the entire ring?

2. How much should I expect to pay for an appraisal?

3. Does Jared do appraisals? If so should I just have them do it?

4. Where can I find an independent appraiser? I used the link on this site but nothing was within 300 miles. I''m in Des Moines Iowa.

Thanks

It is best to have a diamond appraised before it is set, though an appraisal can be done after setting. It is easier to fully examine a stone (and get an accurate weight) on a loose diamond. I would definatly recommend that Jared's NOT appraise the stone. Appraisers should be independent, meaning they do not sell diamonds themselves, as this would constitute a conflict of interest. Have you tried the yellow pages for an appraiser? Some posters may be able to recommend someone in your area, there is bound to be someone living near you. You could always send the diamond out to an appraiser as well.

They have the guy in once a month and you make an appointment to drop it off or stay while the guy does it. I was going to get my ering and wedding band appraised, for both is was $150 so I take it it''s roughly $70 or $80 bucks a piece. They also polish? It for you when they appraise it and charge like $50 for that. I didn''t know much when I went in but knowing what I know now I would specifically ask what comes with thier appraisal. I don''t particulary like Jared myself and think they can be a little sketchy.
