appraisal question

so its been a month and a half now but the ring i ordered should be in the next couple of weeks. and even though my jeweler gives an appraisal on it i thought it might be a good idea to have an independant appraisal look at it just as a second opinion kinda thing. but the two that i did call tell me they do not give appraisals on new jewelery? has anyone ever heard of that. oh and i having a hard time finding other appraisals in my area, even with the search tool on here.
any reasons they wont appraise a new piece of jewelery that you guys know of?

The appraisers are being good to you although it seems confusing at first. If they also sell retail, they often refuse to appraise a new purchase made by a "competitor". It is the right thing to do if they feel they can''t offer an unbiased opinion. Many of these appraisers could do a fair job for you, but they don''t even want you to think that their potential bias has had an effect on their honesty.

What you need is an independent appraiser who makes a business out of advisory services and does not work doing other services or sales which might create even the appearance of potential conflict or bias.

What you must be very careful of is the retailer who says "Sure, I''ll appraise your new diamond." and who may choose to use your purchase to offer you a "better deal" from their own stock of diamonds. This is not an everyday occurence, but it seems to be a story that gets around way too often. So be careful. Ask questions about conflict of interest potential. Look at the operation of the appraiser and judge for yourself if the appraiser is also a retailer. This does have an effect on the validity of the opinions offered to you.

oldminer - thanks for the quick response. one appraiser was a jeweler but the other that i talked to was an independant appraiser.

Not to hijack the thread, but it's somewhat related- Would it be a bad idea to have the shop I'm considering using to have my ring set and possibly created by, to offer a recommendation for an independant appraiser in the area? The ones listed on pricescope's listings are all too far away for me to drive there conveniently.

aeromax - im in the same boat. the ones listed on pricescope are all too far from me also, i did a search online and only found 2 appraisers. im waiting for the experts on this one...
