So I have recived my stone and have found a setting. The setting will be custom made so I have to leave my stone with them, but I haven't gotton my stone appraised yet. I also have microscopes at work so I easily checked the inscribed AGS # and inclusion placement. When I told the jeweler that I would drop the stone off after I had it appraised, they told me that they could appraise it there. (They wern't pushy about it at all) So I'm not sure if this somehow goes against the rule don't get appraisals done by someone who sells also. Thanks for any imput.

Hi Alice, I personally would have it appraised by an independent appraiser, meaning a person who is not involving in the buying and selling of diamonds. That way there is no conflict of interest. While this jeweler may be quite objective, I personally have had experiences with non-independent appraisers trying to push one of their stones or saying how they could have given a much better price on the diamond, etc.

Good luck with everything and don''t forget to post pics of the completed ring!!

Oh, and you can find an independent appraiser by going to the top of this page to resources, then appraisers.

Could be they are objective, and would do a good job.

If they appraise it low or under grade it, though, you''ll probably end up going to an independent for a second opinion anyway.
