appraisal question - verbal or written report?

I am looking to get my e-ring + w-band appraised. I found an appraiser thru pricescope. She has a price for a "verbal" appraisal and a different (higher) price for an appraisal w/ a written report.

What do most people go for? I was thinkig of just going cheap and getting the verbal - is this a bad choice? My rings + diamond are from Union Diamond.

Why are you getting the ring appraised? Is it for your knowledge or for insurance purposes. IMHO it''s better to have it written but I would get it from a company that is reputable. My FI had my ring appraised from an independent appraiser and it only cost him $75. I don''t know the going price, but you can call around. The company he used is in Washington and he found them after speaking to different jewelers and asking which third party company they get their diamonds/jewelry appraised. Ours is used for insurance purpose specifically, but if anyone ever ask we will always have proof. But in the long run, it''s up to you and what you want the appraisal for to begin with. Good luck in figuring it out.
