Hey all! This may sound like a stupid question, but...

Is it better to appraise a loose diamond or a diamond already on the setting?

We need to appraise the stone for insurance purposes, but we were wondering if it is better to appraise it now or if we should wait until it is mounted on the custom setting.

Also, should we appraise the setting too? Our main concern is for the center stone as our jeweler has stated that he will replace any of the small stones on the setting if they ever fall out. But I was thinking, what if the ring gets lost or stolen?

Is it best to appraise the ring as a whole or the diamond and the setting independently?

Thanks in advance!! Happy Holidays!!!

The appraisal for the stone would be better if done while it is loose. You can always get another appraisal of the entire ring once the job is complete.

We encourage appraising unset diamonds by allowing the re-appraisal of a finished ring at a later date at no added cost. Probably other appraisers include this too, or offer some other incentive to provide the best accuracy and service.
