Hi Folks,

Two questions in one.

I have a ring I''m going to try and get rid of (selling ebay or through consignment). Anyways, It was certified, though I dont remember which one, probablly GIA but don''t remember. My question is, do I just get an appraisal of its stats or do I look to have it re-certified? Can that be done on a ring having it be re-certified by GIA or AGSL? Also, does anyone know of online retailers that you can mail in your ring to get appraised versus having to go in in person?

Also, the ring in question has a tiny crack on one corner of the diamond where the prong holds it in place. Its princess cut so from what Im reading on here that at times can be a common occurence. So my question is, in these cases is it wise to get an appraisal and then look to sell with that? Or look to have it all polished out and cut down to be smaller and then try and re sell it? I think the center stone is a .8 so I''m not sure what is the best thing to do in this case to optimize its resale value.

What details do you know about the center? A GIA 0.80ct D VVS is a better candidate than a tinted stone of low clarity if you're considering repair & regrading. You probably know that selling as-is will bring a more reduced price than normal - and reselling jewelry does not normally bring gleeful returns. To me any decision to unmount, repair and remount (if practical after repair) would need to be worth the trouble. The diamond's color/clarity, the damage to it and the setting's particulars all impact this. At some point it's advisable to involve a trusted professional who can confirm the project is worth your effort and expense.

There''s a lot of variables in your question. Sounds to me like you need to spend 20 minutes talking to an appraiser who is actually viewing the stone while answering your questions. There''s several "on-line" appraisers that I would recommend over an on-line retailer. You can locate many in the "resources" button at the top right hand of your screen.

I like John''s advice. If the stone is high quality, repair and certification might be the way to go. If it is mid to low quality, no repair and an appraisal might be the way to go.
