Hello,

I am close to finalizing the purchase of stone and setting and am wondering if it makes sense to have the stone reviewed by an independent lab prior to setting or simply have the whole thing reviewed once it has been set. The jeweler has a good reputation and a 30 day "review" policy for either loose stones or engagement rings. The 1.52ct stone is GIA certified Excellent Cut, 62.4 depth, 55 table, G, SI1, Excellent Polish, Excellent Symmetry, Medium Flour. The platinum ring will also have ~0.4ct of side stones. Not sure if it''s worth having the stone separately reviewed before setting it or just do it all at once after. Bottom line is that I want to make sure that I end up with a good deal for a fairly reviewed stone / ring. Thanks in advance.

Does the GIA lab report provide the measurements for crown / pavilion angle? If so, you can run the measurements of the diamond through the Cut Adviser which is available via the Tools link at the top of this page and get a little more insight. But the cut adviser is only the first step in determining how well the diamond is cut, you should also obtain a computerized proportions analysis which shows the facet-by-facet structure of the diamond (which the average crown / pavilion angle measurements are based upon) and many of the independent Gemologists available via the Resources link at the top of this page can provide this information for you if they are provided with the opportunity to evaluate the diamond while it is unmounted; as well as provide you with images of the diamond as seen through an ASET scope; Ideal Scope; and Gems Fantasy Scope which all provide insight into the optical symmetry of the diamond...

And all of this is necessary to tell you whether you''re getting a good deal on a good diamond or not...

The crown and pavilion angles are needed please, or if you prefer, you could post the report number so we can look the rest of the info up.

That would be great, thank you very much. The GIA Report is #2106535317. I''ve also pasted an ASET image below that the jeweler provided me. They are very reputable in town and both of the people that have been helping me (including the owner) have assured me that this is a wonderfully cut diamond with perfect hearts and arrows and very minimal inclusions for an SI1 (it certainly looks eye clean). The owner went so far as to compare it to almost as well cut as an infinity branded diamond (minus the premium price).

The ASET image looks very good indeed. As to whether it is as well cut as an Infinity, don't know if this diamond is a h&a and doesn't have the proportions Infinity use, nor does it have an AGS report, however it does look like a very nice stone, is it from DS?

With no offense directed towards you Indecisive16, as an authorized Infinity dealer, I take offense to that comparison and feel the need to address the statement to avoid negative impact upon the Infinity product and potential customers...

Compare the measurements of the diamond you''re being offered to the measurements for an Infinity brand round brilliant ideal cut diamond and you will see that there is no comparison. Quite simply, the total depth of the diamond is too deep at 62.4% and the crown angle is too steep at 35.5 degrees... This diamond wouldn''t make it past the initial "by the numbers" phase of our selection process. It might be a pretty diamond, but it''s definitely not comparable to an Infinity.

Note to forum admin, the comparison statement was initially made by the jeweler representing the stone and as an authorized Infinity dealer, I believe I have the right to clarify why the stone is NOT comparable to an Infinity product since a direct comparison to the Infinity production has been made.

No offense taken, it''s you perogative to clarify and I appreciate the help. In fairness to the dealer, I don''t want to overstate what was said as he was only trying to help point out certain of the features this stone had and didn''t say it was an exact ringer for an infinity (nor did I take it that way so I should have clarified better in original note). Bottom line is that it seems like this is a well cut, quality stone in line with what I am looking for. Thanks again for taking the time to help.
