We're not familiar with the Detroit area, but did you check the list available via the "appraisers" link at the top of this page? It shows three for Michigan. If none of those are convenient for you, you might consider having the diamond drop shipped to one of the more prominent appraisers like David Atlas, Martin Fuller, Marty Haske, Bill Lieberman, Nancy Stacy, etc. listed in no particular order... For evaluation because all of them offer inspection and forwarding services and most of the internet dealers, including ourselves, will ship to them before the client purchases the diamond so that the characteristics of the diamond may be verified prior to the client making payment.
Ahhh...I overlooked the obvious. I searched all of the forums for "Detroit" and didn't find much regarding appraisals. Unbeknownest to me, there was already a link.
James Krol of Birmingham Gemological Services is good. I've taken some of my things to him; his cost is reasonable and he doesn't give over-inflated appraisals. They're located in downtown Birmingham. If you want any more info, PM me.
Yeah, he has been recommended to me by one of the "respected" appraisers on this board. Going local avoids some shipping steps, and in my case allows appraisal of a loose stone and then a revisit to review the setting. One can only admire, however, the documentation sets, detail and advanced tools of some the high end appriasers. Search on this board for peoples experiences.
