I was looking at different appraisal services, and I noticed at http://www.pacificgemlab.net/list.html, they have a policy that says this:

"Diamonds
Diamond grading and certificate issued only for loose diamonds.
Loose Diamond Grading, including certificate and appraisal:"

Is this common? If so, how does one get a stone that''s set in a ring appraised?

(In case you''re wondering, I have this wacky idea of flying to Portland to buy a ring from Costco to save on sales tax, and then having it appraised there... Plane tickets to PDX from SFO are cheap!)

Buy one online and save sales tax and a plane tix-which you should pay later according to the law anyway!

I think appraisors can do a much better job of telling your diamonds worth unmounted to they can see all inclusions, and grade the color themselves, it is impossible to fully judge cut on a mounted stone.Of course I am sure that is only half of it :)

Kimberly is right...you should be paying sales tax anyway if you follow the law.

And I would always consider buying online before flying to Costco in another state!

And the thing with appraising a set diamond ring is that the appraisal would be only "approximate" because the diamond cannot be that accurately measured (size, color, clarity, cut etc.) in a setting.

Ah - very good points.

I guess I just got a little carried away from reading all those positive evals of buying from Costco and the fantastic results in the other threads.

Bayarea,

Your post motivated me to check out the other Costco thread, and did, and think buying there wouldn''t be wacky.

But how''s this: go to Portland, buy something at Costco, and then drive to NiceIce, show it to Todd, and see if he can improve on your choice. You may want to try to do homework with both in advance, with them having options in place for you to look at. Maybe it can all be done on a Saturday?

Best wishes,

Niceice huh? Interesting... I'll have to check it out.

Yeeks - they're a 3 hour drive from PDX!
