Is the ogitech megascope a good tool for an appraiser to use in evalution? Are other tools necessary as well and what are they? I have some diamonds I would like to have appraised - they were recently inherited and I have no idea of their value. Also, do the pricescope vendors take trades that were not originally purchased from them?

An appraiser normally does not need a Sarin or Megascope to appraise jewelry or diamonds. It is a good piece of equipment, but not a major component for evaluating most diamonds. If I need to fine tune the exact cut of a superior cut diamond, then a Sarin or Megascope may come into play, but for the vast majority, it is not required.

You should find out what your items will liquidate for BEFORE you offer to trade them. Trading blind is a license for the other side, likely more expert than you, to obtain the trade at your disadvantage.

I''d guess that most Pricescope vendors do not handle general estate jewelry, but specialize mostly in diamonds. GOG may be an exception since Jonathan has a real B&M store with a variety of merchandise. Maybe there are others who I am unaware of, but it will be limited. Tradjng is fun but you must know the real value first.

I agree with Dave, the Ogi is a nice tool but rarely applies to your situation. What you’re looking for in an appraiser is skill at market research and the ability to communicate their findings well. For grading like this the most important tools are a good microscope, a good micrometer or similar tool, good color masters and a standardized lighting environment.

Thanks Old Miner - yes, I plan to get these diamond rings appraised and am thinking of using a pricescope independent appraiser who lives in my area? Would that be a good idea? After I get an appraisal, how do I go about selling/trading them? Any suggestions? I am looking to buy a new ring for myself and had hoped to trade in one of these newly acquired rings. But as you said, most vendors on Pricescope probably would not be interested? Any thoughts are appreciated? Thanks!
