So I got my heirloom pear shaped diamond made into a pendant. I don't know much about this diamond except its 2.51 carats. When I went to the local jeweler, I asked him what the color was on the diamond and he said he believes its a G color because he compared it to a GIA H color pear diamond that he had in stock and my diamond was slightly whiter, and the diamond weighed 2.51 ct. I got the diamond a set and the local jeweler also provided an appraisal on the pendant as well. When I got it back, the appraisal said it was a 2.52ct (off by 0.01), J color diamond....now, I've seen J colored fancy shaped diamonds before and my pear is not as warm as GIA J colored pears I viewed in real life. My question is, should I trust the local jeweler appraisal or should I get it appraised somewhere else too? Thanks in advance!

Start by talking to your appraiser but I’m a bit confused. He saw it loose, weighed it and graded it a G, and then wrote a report with a different weight and color? What changed?

That's what I'm worried about. Idk what changed. plus, I don't know if it is the same guy that appraised it because the local jeweler store has a lot of workers and only one guy sets the stones and stuff. The guy that graded the diamond showed me the H color diamond side by side with my diamond and showed me how my diamond was slightly whiter. Honestly, at that point, I couldn't see a difference between the two. And before, I helped a friend find a pear diamond and all they showed is was J color pears so I know how warm those pears are. My diamond is not warm like a J.

My heirloom did not have any papers, so I'm worried that they probably switched the diamond or something? I haven't seen the pendant yet.

I purchased a J color Brian Gavin Signature diamond. It faces up to me, just as white as a GIA XXX F color diamond that I had. I was recently checking the prongs of the ring that has the J color diamond set with my loupe. Holding my diamond up into the light and looking at the underneath of the diamond with the loupe (if that makes sense), I could see the color/tint of the J. But, like I said, next to my F color, just looking at both of them in their settings, the color is the same to me. A few years ago, I purchased an I color hearts and arrows diamond, and sent it back, as the diamond was very cream colored just to look at. My J color diamond was recently appraised. The color came back on the appraisal as J/K. I was surprised with the J/K, but then again, what matters is that I like my diamond and the look of it. The diamond was graded by AGS as a VS1 with a crystal inclusion. The appraisal came back as VVS1. The weight of my diamond was off by .004. If the diamond still looks the same color when you look at it as before, and if there were inclusions, and those inclusions are still there, then I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm not an expert, but the diamond is large enough that the weight could very likely be off slightly and that could be normal. I guess what I'm trying to say is the appraisal was extremely close to the AGS grading, but not exactly the same.

The appraisal report should be signed, and the signature should be labeled with who it is. Call them up and discuss it. Their contact information should be in the document itself but if it's not there, call the store and ask. It doesn't make a bit of difference how many people work there. Only one signed your report. That's the one you should be talking to.
