I have been reading through this forum about people''s good and bad experiences with appraisals. Does anyone have advice to ensure one gets everything necessary for insurance as well as confidence and peace of mind? Perhaps a list of questions to ask and what to expect from a good appraisal.

Thanks

Here's a link that should really help you out!

https://www.pricescope.com/appraiser.asp

Also, remember that you don't necessarily want your stone appraised for a lot because you'll have to pay insurance on it. My B/F and I chose our appraiser off the PS site https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.asp, and he was really great to work with. He gave us a great appraisal, and then asked what amount we wanted the appraisal for (obviously he wouldn't go higher than what he thought it was worth, but he gave us the option to go lower).

So, my advice is to follow the advice here on PS!

I have bought 2 diamonds in the past three months and have used 2 separate appraisers. Both of them did a fantastic job on my stones. They were both competitively priced and gave me more than enough info for insurance purposes. I used Chubb insurance and there was no problem as far as insurace either. I did have the stones sent to appraisers that were located out of my area. Just to be on the safe side I had a third appraiser check both stones to compare the info that I received from the original guys and it was right on. The third guy was in my hometown so that was not a problem. For a couple hundred bucks my mind is totally at ease with both stones and there is no need for me to worry if I have to put in a claim with my insurance company. I have TWO appraisals, so as far as the insurace company goes there is no way in he** that they can dispute the quality of the stones one bit.

What I did was ordered a diamond through BlueNile that was to my taste and price and have them send it to one of the independent appraisers listed on PS. The one near me was great. He had lots of information and showed me a lot of cool things about my diamond. But best of all, he helped me set up my insurance through a trusted Jewelry Insurance group (in my case it was Jewelers Mutual). I had the diamond appraised and it matched all the reports and by the time I walked out the door, my insurance was running and I had a great diamond at a ridiculous price.

It's a safe way to do it, especially with a trusted appraiser and the usual return policies of most online jewelers. Don't be afraid to double check the local appraisers and the ones listed on this site. Also, you can add it onto your homeowners or renters insurance usually for quite a low price. (Jewelers Mutual is about $1 for every $100 that the diamond is worth...same with most) Good luck with your search. This site is the best for finding answers
