I have appointment with 2 jewelers at the Los Angeles Jewelry district this weekend. I''m a bit nervouse, it seems like every jewelry store I visit, when I asked too many question they get annoyed or they don''t have answers (do you have GIA stones....what''s the cut quality...). I''ve been to LAJD before, I know I should gather all the information before I go. But BF and I feel embarrass if I ask too many question....especially BF

If the jeweler is getting annoyed or impatient with you for asking questions, then they aren't the jeweler for you!!! We've been to the LAJD too and it can be quite overwhelming!!! You are making a big purchase and if the jeweler wants your confidence, return business and referrals, they will be MORE than willing to accommodate you...if not, then it's THEIR loss, not yours!!!!

Please don't feel embarrassed for asking the questions...you need to know that you're spending your money on what you want!!! Doing the research is important and applying that research is even MORE important!! Not asking questions is like buying the diamond on blind faith, and you certainly wouldn't want to do that!!!

Who are you going to see this weekend?? (Who are your appointments with??)

Let us know how it turns out!!!

One with Single Stone, the other one is Paragon Jewelry(this one is from family referral). They are both in the same building, very close to each other. I know GIA certificate doesn''t list crown angle and Pavillion angle in their certificate, how can I know if it''s a good cut?

Ask for more details, like a SARIN report on the stone to get the cut information. They should have access to someone who has the instrument if they don''t have one.

DONT FEEL BAD AT ALL for asking questions!!!!! And definately don''t let anyone make you feel bad. If they can''t answer them, oh well, don''t let them turn that around on you as if you are "bothering them". Excuse me, but you are the customer.

A good vendor will let you know when they don''t have all the answers - and will offer the best way to find out if they are interested in your business. I would tend to want to work with them.

Also - to make you "feel" more confident - resolve not to buy anything this trip. If you do find a stone that you like, tell yourself that you need at least 1 day or so to think it over. You can always contact this vendor and tell them "yes" or "no" on a stone on YOUR terms.

Relax - have fun, look at the stones to get a good feel for what you like. Ask for a SARIN report to be run on the stone if there is no angle information. Ask to see the hearts and arrows - if it is an H&A diamond. It''s ok to ask if they have the info.

Have a great time!

Does the jeweler charge for a Sarin report?

In a selling situation - usually not. I have never been charged. Even when I asked a jeweler (outside of the pricescope world) he said sure - and borrowed a machine from a collegue..

Maybe someone else can chime in here.

This might sound like a dumb question, even if I have the crown angle and pavilion angle. How do I know if it''s a good cut? Do I need to memorize the # before I went to the jeweler?

Don''t worry about memorization! Lol! You sound like me last week when I went to see stones that I knew could be all over the place in the cut area.

Before you go - re-read some of the tutorials in the knowledge section.. just to familarizie yourself of the "range" you want to be in. So - if someone says.. here''s a round brillant stone with a 65% depth - you can say "no thanks... do you have any that are between say 59-61 ish?" And so on. The HCA calculator allows you to plug in the "combination" of all the angles to see where it would show up evaluating "all" the numbers... but unfortunately at this time it''s not downloadable??? (HEY.. maybe that''d be a good idea... actually, I haven''t tried it on my blackberry.. I wonder if it would work..?... sorry, off topic)

Anyway, just collect the information as you go - and you know that "we''ve got your back!" here at pricescope. Seriously, take your time... look at the stone... as someone recommended to me.. put your hand over it to sheild some light.. see how it looks without direct light hitting it. Hold it close.. hold it far away... look into it. See if you can see any inclusions that bother you. Get a feel for it. Then look at the next stone. Collect the information in a notebook - or sometimes they can just print out the report for you to take home. Then - when you get home - plug in the numbers to the HCA.

I did this.. when I got home.. the one I liked the best was the "best" HCA score. Just by looks only.

Anyway - the point of this long rambling post is.. Take your time. Look to see what you like & don''t like. Don''t rely on just one vendor - and see as much as you can. Then take a deep breath, go home, and think about it. If you don''t have to buy just then.. wait, just a day or so before you make your decision - plus you can post here for help!

Just to also add on to what laney said, most reputable vendors will give you a copy of any certs/reports on stones that you''re considering so you can compare and determine which stones you want (at least the jewelers I visited in LAJD did)...then I had the opportunity to take notes on each record about what I liked/disliked about each stone...when I got to the final jeweler (where I ultimately bought my EC stone), I had seen enough "nice" stones to recognize that this was "THE" stone for us!!

can I ask which jeweler you went to in LAJD? I''m planning to purchase under a carate. Will the jeweler provide me with the sarin report and copy of certs? Will they think it''s too much trouble for such a small stone....I know...I''m going nuts....I''m getting pressure from the BF to get a stone soon...I guess he can''t wait to propose

We went through Liberty Diamonds...we met Troy at the LAJD office, but it's by appointment only. I was at their OC (Irvine) office yesterday and he now has a Sarin machine there and told us it would be up and running by the end of this week! If you're truly interested in purchasing a stone, Troy would give you a copy of the cert/report if you asked, so you'd know which one you're interested in. You'd get the actual report upon purchasing the stone...

I believe we also went to Bridal Rings, Inc. and one other (the name escapes me at the moment)...we weren't impressed with BRI, so I didn't ask for any report copies.

Be happy that your BF is so excited that he wants to propose!! How sweet!!!

I think he is just tired of me asking all the question with the jeweler. He said "you can''t see it with your naked eyes anyway"

I dealt with those same two as well "Troy and Bridal Rings"

Troy was nice but I gave him my specs and he claimed he had 3 stones and we set a date to see them. Then while confirming the appt I decided to question him on the stones and it turned out he had 3 stones not at all within my specs! He was simply trying to sell me the stuff he had! Of course, all people in business do that and I would not mind if he said so but he left out the fact that these stones where not what I asked for. Grrrrrrr

Bridal Rings was a like a big Robbin's brothers to me and the sales guy I had tried to push the most unsymmetrical Marquise I ever saw! He knew nothing about diamonds and when I favored one little stone he said it was a bad choice due to the light fluoro and smirked when I said I liked fluoro. Then he proceed to a gross stone that had a 2.25/1 ratio after I told him no skinny stones!

Since do do head could not keep up with me their in house Gemologist took a turn at me and tried to selll me a super deep Marquise and one with a terribly thick girdle. She too thought I was a fruitcake as I told her I did not want to pay for a stone that held its weight in it's girdle.

Anyhooo you go and ask your questions and run if they don't answer them to your satisfaction. Get reports and sarins and all the stuff u can prior to buying. Remember they are going to push what they have. It is expected. Narrow down what you want before going!
U can always buy the stone online you know and send it to an independant apprassor.
