Anything wrong with this BGS Diamond?

Hi All,

I've been lurking this forum for a while and I think I'm finally ready to make a purchase. I came across this Brian Gavin Signature diamond and was about to bite because of the price, but I wanted to get a second opinion first before I make such a big purchase. The diamond in question is 1.158 carats, for $8969 (Brian Gavin is running a 5% discount right now which would decrease it more), is a G and VS2. What's weird is that Brian Gavin has a diamond at the same price with comparably worse specs (1.016, G, SI1): http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/d...ls/1.016-g-si1-round-diamond-ags-104072827010

This makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the 1.158 carat diamond. There is also no mention of the diamond being eye clean, which almost every other BGS diamond page mentions. Can someone take a look at the ASET/Ideal Scope and specs to see what's driving the price of that diamond down so much?

That diamond might be a stone that a previous owner upgraded from. The AGS report dates from Dec '15 and the listing is using their older video tech compared to newer listings.

Nothing wrong with the IS and ASET not with the proportions on the grading report either in my books. Only a few tiny crystals. The one that is black (I think) is out on the girdle and you could place a prong/claw over it when setting it. This looks like a comparative bargain. If you are interested in it, you should ask the folks at BGD to hold it for you and get their opinion on eye clean (to my eyes, this stone will be eye clean).
 
Nothing wrong with the 1.15 stone. Diamonds are acquired by vendors at different times and are priced according to the market when they are received. I love the numbers on the WF stone and loved dealing with WF but you can't go wrong with either stone.

Where do you see that the AGS report dates from Dec'15? I'm seeing April 2017.

Hence why I'm suspecting even more that this stone was a stone that was upgraded by a previous owner.

Looks like you're right. That is probably why the price is much lower.
 
I reckon it is not too shabby a buy at that price and with discounts.

I had a similar experience in January purchasing a matched pair of stones for my wife's new studs from BGD. The pair of I VVS2 stones I eventually chose cost less than a pair or J VS2's or I SI1's that had 6 points less total carat weight (and IMHO, were cut better than the other options). It happens at times and when it does, you are in the market and you have the cash to spend, it's a great time to be purchasing diamonds.
 
Haha, my eyesight is gone. Was an October '15 AGS report initially.
 
In terms of cut quality and optical symmetry, the BGD 1.158 is better than that B2C 1.2 hands down IMHO. You can see the difference in the hearts images for both stones. The arrow shafts also line up with the arrow heads more as well (though the BGD arrow shafts are fatter than the B2C ones due to the lower girdle facets being 76 rather than 78).

Both stones will be eye clean from a distance, but to me the BGS is clean under the table unlike the B2C stone where there are black crystals visible in the magnified image. As I mentioned earlier, I can only see a black inclusion off near the girdle on the BGS stone based on the video.

Don't get me wrong though, the B2C stone is cut well. It's light performance is good, but IMHO, the BGS is better. I have a sneaking suspicion on the resale market, the BGD stone will fare better plus I think BGD has a better upgrade policy than B2C does (something to consider if you wish to upgrade in the future). If the carat weight is important, then B2C might be better for you instead.
 
I didnt know BG sells used diamond in their list !
 
Those "used" stones will also include the stones that have been bought and then returned for one reason or another, in addition to stones that owners have upgraded from.

Is there a way to check the full history of a stone (like all past certificates)? My girlfriend said she wants a stone that has never been own by anyone else before.
 
That I would not know about. I would think that you could ask the vendor and they should be able to tell you about that stone's ownership history.
 
So even though the diamond is worth more now, they still resell it at the original sale price? I always assumed they would adjust the price up to market value when reselling s trade in.
 
There are more stones in recirculation than you realise, best not to open that can of worms although it may be too late..
