Wedding anyone wear mother''s or vintage gown?

It seemed to be a trend sometime ago, but never hear of anyone wearing their mother''s gown anymore. I was just curious to hear about or see photos of anyone who did.

I dont have any photos, but my friend wore her moms and she got married 2 yrs ago and she''s 22 now? She got married at 19 and it was a very classic gown, not all the high button lace arms and neck deal. I like those gowns too, minus the poofy arms!

Unfortunately my mom got married in jeans and a tie-dyed tshirt so...

But I do love the idea of a gown being passed down, given that it''s something classic and not something that *screams* a certain bygone era.

My mother suggested since I have the same large chest my sister did that I wear her wedding dress....puffy sleeves, sequins all over, certainly a dress from 1989. I wouldn''t be surprised if she suggested we cut me some bangs and tease them up to make them all puffy too.
Needless to say I gave a very firm no lol.

I think that it''s a wonderful tradition. I have a friend who is going to wear the dress that her mother and grandmother wore before her. I would have liked to do it. However. My mother was married in the seventies wearing a VERY seventies dress. Also, I am 5''9, and my mother is 5''3. So yeah. But I think it''s really sweet to wear a passed down dress.

maybe I will have a vintage-inspired gown. Some styles are just timeless and I try to channel Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and the like

My mother still has her dress but she was teeny tiny when she got married so I''m not sure I''d fit in it. It has some pink roses on it too (sounds horrible but they actually look beautiful), and I''m sort of a less is more girl so I''m not sure it kind of goes with me.

My mom got married in a long denim skirt and a long sleeved tee shirt!

If she had a dress to pass on I would love to have the option to incorporate parts of her dress into my own once I''m engaged and go looking for a gown.

My mom wore a gorgeous dress but was also a size 2, and my ladies wouldn''t have a chance of fitting in there.

However a friend from high school got married about a year ago, and she wore her mother''s dress...

I always dreamed of wearing my grandmother''s gown (dad''s mom). Alas she was 4''11 and weighed 90 lbs. soaking wet, simply not possible, but so unfortunate as her dress is amazing.

A cousin of mine got married in the same gown that her mother and grandmother were both married in. It was breathtaking. She just wore it for the ceremony and some pictures, then had a different gown for the reception.

A girl on my local knot board used the skirt of her mother''s gown and had a seamstress remake the bodice. I think it came out amazing!

I''m thinking of shortening my mom''s dress and using it as my after party dress. I''ll let you know when it arrives she''s sending it to me in the next month or so. I told her not to hurry.

I am actually planning on wearing my mom''s dress. She was about the same size I am now when she got married. However, she got married in 1983, so there are definitely going to be some changes before I actually wear it myself (bye-bye lace sleeves). No pictures yet though. The dress is in Michigan while my aunt works on it, and I''m in Colorado, so it will be awhile before I get to see it again.

I knew someone from HS who didn't wear her mother's gown, but a "dress up" wedding gown her grandmother had made for her when she was a child. There were quite a few alterations, but I thought that was a really sweet idea. I suppose I could have done the same thing, but mine was a white polo shirt, a cotton slip with a lace edge, and about a yard of lace attached to a plastic headband.

My mom's wedding dress is GORGEOUS - here's a link to a pattern like it (the dress that is second from the right), only mom's had more of a scoop neck, and an empire waist. The bottom was plain satin and the top was a white brocade that my mom's roomate (who I think was Indonesian? My parents lived in the International student dorm) had her mother send over to the states. It was also sewn by my great-grandmother, which makes it that much more special.

I would have worn it in the second, but the satin has yellowed and is really stiff and mom was about a size four (the dress is about a 6) and I was a 16/18 for my wedding, so even a starvation diet wouldn't have gotten me into that dress. Instead, I carried my mom's wedding purse on my wedding day which was made out of scraps from the brocade and the inside was lined with the satin, and my dress had a lot of detail that reminded me of my mom's of her dress. In fact, when I tried it on in the store, I said "I like this one; it reminds me of yours" and we both teared up. Granted, after all the alterations I did on it, there wasn't much left that resembled it, but oh well.

Wow love this site! Gorgeous gowns!!!

The knot girl that re-did her mom's dress has a cool page too. I think it's really neat to see people wearing their mom's gowns.

I'm keeping my dress, maybe it will be re-wearable one day? Hehe... not holding my breath.
