I have no idea about the 'vedic stuff', but there are quite a few gem sellers who make a living out of it. My ex-boss used to go for this kind of stuff and, as far as I remember, mentioned this source in the context 'there is no way to get a natural pearl these days!'. I guess that, regarding the pearls, he is right...
