Anyone kind enough to give an opinion on these?

Hi,

Could anyone so kindly give me an opinion on these diamonds? James Allen seems to have the setting I want, and I was trying to stay at all one place. This is not an investment diamond, I want something sparkly that looks its size. I am also open to any other diamond within the size and similar cost. Thanks for any advice.

double post

cut is most important. these stones do not have the best cut. You can go down in color a bit to get the size you want and stay within budget.

here is the cheat sheet to help you find a good diamond.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

table and depth % can be searched in James allen with the advanced searches, the rest has to be found in the certs.

also, once you have that info, you'll want to put those numbers into the HCA tool and see what it says, ideally you want numbers under 2

https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

then when youve found three stones you like from JA, get idealscopes and the SA opinions on which is best.

I understand what you are saying as its not an "investment", you dont feel you need high color or clarity... but i recommend putting your money in cut, as that is what makes your stone have the sparkle. Also, going just a bit under 1ct can give you the look of one ct without the price jump.

Also, whats the setting you like? Just wondering? If you set a stone in yellow or rose gold, you can easily get away with a K.... also, you can even do that by asking them to leave the white gold unplated, making it look a little bit warmer, and helping blend the colors better

for this one the crown angle is a little out of ideal, but hits your price point, 1ct mark, the inclusion looks like it could be covered by a prong, faces up nice, and has a good HCA score, so worth getting an idealscope if you find only 2 others you like

heres one i really like, nice clarity, juuuust under a ct so its cheaper(thought if you look at the mm size, its the same mm as the 1st and 3rd stones you posted), AGS 000 (a good thing, dont even have to use the HCA tool!) and faces up really white to me, I think that could go in white gold just fine!

my ring is a .84 K in unplated 14k WG from JA. I am color sensitive as i can see the difference between an H and an I and so on, but the difference is i quite like the way a K looks. Its like a soft bone color. not "icy white" but very beautiful and not yellow at all!

Niel's ring is the perfect example of how a well-cut diamond will camouflage a lower color. The last thing I think of is "yellow" when looking at her ring!! I have a J and it is plenty white! (and this was taken in crappy lighting at work...)

Get a lower color and MAXIMIZE THE SIZE!! Go for it!! :appl:

I just replaced my "G" good cut side stones with "I" ideal cut stones and the new ones look the same color as my "H" center. The previous stones also matched. All certified stones.

The 1st diamond is deeper than what is usually recommended. The HCA score is 3.7 - "Very Good, worth buying if the price is right" with Very Good for Light Return and Fire, and Good for Scintillation and Spread.

The 2nd has a 61% table, larger than its 58.6% depth, and I do think the inclusions would be easily visible.

The 3rd diamond is also deeper than recommended, and has a slightly thick-to-thick girdle - basically this diamond is carrying extra weight in the pavilion and in the girdle, so while you are paying for a 1-carat diamond, it is facing up more like a 0.90ct diamond. As well, I think its inclusions would be visible.

I would recommend the following diamond: it is a well-cut 0.91ct I-VS2 - http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.91-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-sku-227653 - and it faces up at apx 6.3mm, comparable to your #1 and #3 diamond - it has a 0.8 HCA score, with Excellent in all four categories. And it is within your budget at $4300, not counting the discount that JA gives to PS members (usually 1-5% depending on the diamond). If you are interested in this diamond, I would suggest you include it as one of your 3 IdealScope requests that JA permits per customer, and ask JA to Hold it for you while you're waiting for the image.

Thanks so much for all the help. Neil and Msop I never imagined a K could look so good. I have the first diamond on a hold that you posted Neil. The SA at JA told me she felt it was also a good choice. Thanks again linn

Oh awesome, i think youll be very happy dropping in color over cut. The color like this will not reduce the sparkle, and the cut will definitely be the thing that delivers the sparkle! Plus, the average stone out in a mall store and such is around a J anyways, so in the real world, its not going to be much different than other peoples in color, but VERY different in sparkle when compared to others ;) Did the rep say if she thought that inclusion could be covered with a prong? Also, what setting were you going to put it in? Just wondering :wavey:
