I have developed some serious life threatening allergies to almost all antibiotics over the past years. DH thinks I ought to get one of those medic alert bracelets since he is even unsure of everything I am allergic to, and if I was unconcious and given one of these antibiotics I would most likely go into anephylatic (sp?) shock (this happened to me once already).

Do you wear a medic alert bracelet/necklace/watch? If so, do you wear it 24 hours a day? Obviously this jewelry is not "blingy" enough for me, so I''m having trouble picking something out. I''m not much of a bracelet wearer, but I also think the necklace might get irritating under my tops all the time.

Yes, I have to wear one. I am diabetic (kind of minor concern at this point), but am also highly allergic to CT contrast dye (potentially fatal). I have 3 different bracelets so far, and am not 100% happy with any of them. They don''t make these things very stylish IMO.

I have a 14kt yellow gold bracelet. It was around $500 I think. I haven''t found an affordable white gold one available. Places tend to really gouge you for these items. My bracelets all have laser engraving, which is much less "deep" than regular engraving, but it is usually done for a nominal fee from the place you buy the bracelet. I wear my sterling silver cuff bracelet with dangling ID charm the most often. I am considering getting one made up in yellow gold as it is easy to wear. I also have a leather and S/S one that I wear for sports, but it is not waterproof like the other two.

To be honest, sometimes I just take off my bracelet when I''m at home because it gets on my nerves that I have to wear it. Purely psychological. I can''t leave the house without a watch, so I''m always sure to put on my ID bracelet. Usually I do wear the bracelet (gold or silver one) 24/7.

That''s the problem...I haven''t found 1 in white gold yet. Only yellow gold, sterling silver or stainless steel.

Medic ID You can try that site. They have some pieces in WG, although they are very expensive. And not pretty. The tags have to be large enough to engrave your information, that is the problem I found. I have bought other pieces from there, and they are great to work with.

I don't wear one, but what about something like this? You could get a couple different bracelets (you could even make your own if you're into that, you just need the tag to interchange) You could even have it be part of a watch if you wanted! Of course, I'm not sure if you like that kind of jewelry, but if you do, I think it's a pretty alternative if you want something different.

Oops, that picture didn't work I guess? So heres a link about it. http://www.laurenshope.com/product.aspx?id=718&cat_id=55

I stopped wearing mine about a year ago, but I have a sterling silver bracelet and a necklace. I wore the bracelet more often, and to be honest both pieces bothered me. I have life threatening food allergies, so I''ve had to wear something since I was a little girl. (When I was really young I attended private school and I was the ONLY kid who got to wear a button on my blouse, so special!)

I''ve never been able to find "cute" medic alert jewelry, but it really is important to wear it.

Both of my children wear them 24/7. My advice would be to do the same. And whatever one you pick out needs to look very oviously like a medic alert bracelet. You just don''t want something that looks so much like regular jewelry that you waste precious time while the medics look for it or god forbid don''t even recognise it as a medic alert!

I was thinking the same thing. Most of the companies I have found online offer watches, but I think that could get looked over by a medic during a medical emergency and they wouldn''t know it was a medic alert piece.

Can I ask what your children wear them for? The whole reason I am considering getting this is because 2 of my children have severe food allergies, and another suffers from asthma pretty badly, so I started out by looking at the bracelets for them, since as they get older and are away from me more, they are also out of my control more and more likely to come in contact with things that they are allergic too. I thought that it may be easier to get them to wear them if Mommy wore one also.

What do you think would stand up better...sterling silver or stainless steel? I''ve never had jewelry made out of either.

My kids have severe food allergies and asthma as well. The good thing is that if you get the kids wearing them they pretty much forget about them very fast. The medic alert site has bracelets where you can get the color of the symbol done in whatever color you like. I let my kids pick their own colors and that made them like the idea a bit better. The bracelets are def. the way to go in my opinion. They are impossible for a child to take off. They last forever too. We have only replaced the kids bracelets once each and that was just because they were growing bigger. I think we had stainless? Not sure.
