Anyone have experience with hair oiling for growth?

I have recently started to see lots of IG posts about oiling your scalp for scalp care, hair fall, growth, etc. Friday night my scalp was itchy, so I decided to give it a try. I had some sesame oil on hand (what my Indian friend swears by) and tried it. It felt so nice, and my hair is so smooth and glossy since, even in the Southern summer humidity. So I was wondering if anyone has any insight if it really helps with growth, or is it just placebo because it feels so good? Any recommendations?

My background is Indian and I grew up with hair oiling! I remember buying Parachute brand coconut oil in the blue bottles in India. Or Vatika which was full of other herbs. I have read a lot about hair growth in the last decade because I developed trichotillomania which is a hair pulling disorder. Even with this condition, people always compliment me on my hair and ask if it is real. Let me know if you want some links to studies but there is one I remember that was done on rats - lavender oil in a carrier oil such as coconut doubled the rate of hair growth on bald rats compared with no treatment. There is a product in the US called Healthy Hair Oil with Bhringaraj and Amla in it - two Ayurvedic herbs which helps hair growth. I use this as my carrier oil.

I am really glad you posted this because it is reminding me to apply my essential oil mix on a roller bottle whenever I feel like pulling or picking. Thank you!

@ilovegemstones Its so funny you mention that brand because I just stumbled upon it this morning while I researched. Hubby asked this morning if I'm always gonna smell like stir fry now, lol, so I was looking to see if there was something better. He is used to my home remedies however and a good sport about it.

I'm really curious to see if it will help with hair growth just for fun reasons. My oldest son is getting married in December and I'd like it to be longer. No biggie either way, just curious to do my own little experiment.

I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from trich. My close friend does as well, though it's her eyebrows and lashes she pulls. I always know when she needs extra "girl time" and help with her children just by looking at her beautiful face.

You are a good friend to her. I wish I had sa friend here to take the load off! Y husband does do a lot. Luckily none of my 3 girls have trich - just skin picking.

@Mrs_Strizzle -

I've thought about doing this with Argon oil. If you have any links about the topic, I'd love to read them! I have no idea where to start or how to do it properly.

@ilovegemstones
I have suffered with trich since I was about 7 years old. It has been a life-long struggle.
The urge still comes and goes, but it comes less and less now that I am older(57) which is such a relief.
I have tried hard to control it, and nothing ever really helped. I never tried hair oiling, however!
I have several other family members with this problem, so I am convinced it is hereditary.
Best wishes to you!

I'm black with exceptionally curly hair so for me its a must. I use much thicker oils though. I also don't wash my hair except 1 day a week, though I will rinse my scalp after workouts.

Do you use it for scalp care or mainly to retain moisture in your hair, or the humidity out? I have recently discovered the necessity for me to put oil on as the last step or my waves will be witch-like as soon as I step outside in 98% humidity. I've always been afraid to put oil on my scalp because I'm extremely acne prone due to hormonal imbalances (I have pcos.) My friends who are of other ethnicities roll their eyes at me because they grew up taking good care of their hair and scalp, being taught by multiple generations. My straight haired Mom didn't do anything like that and I just thought my hair was a disaster my whole life. Not curly but certainly not glass straight and I never knew how to take care of it or make it even look nice. Right out of college I started working in the medical field so hair pulled back was mandatory. Now that I work for myself and can learn just about anything from the internet, I'm trying to catch up!

Here is a great hair oil. You can also use jojoba oils as a carrier and add lavender to it.

Below is the study on lavender essential oil and hair growth compared to Rogaine

Hope that helps!

@stracci2000 WOW! So nice to meet someone else here who does that too! How many rings have I bought saying - with this ring I will stop hair pulling? Lol! No one can tell anymore by looking at me and I get a lot of compliments on my hair which makes me tempted to tell them about my trich struggle! I used to have to wear a hear piece! It ihas come back a little bit and I have a bald spot the size of 2 dimes. I just bought a book on how to stop smoking because I think some ideas will help.

I have extremely fine, soft hair that cannot hold a curl, and gets weighted down so easily. My scalp & skin is also naturally very oily (which I find yuck but some swear it's a blessing against wrinkles!) So for me oiling my scalp is a no-no!

The only time I use oil on my hair is for my ends if they're a bit dry; & even then I have to use a 1/2 pea size amount. I have to play the oil-the-ends -> dry-shampoo-the-scalp game to keep my hair from looking and feeling blah. I'm afraid even just a yearly hot oil treatment would weigh down my hair and take multiple washes to come out.

I don't have any hair loss yet, although I was expecting it after having this baby. I'm curious if there's anyone that has that has similar hair/skin to mine and can report on effectiveness when it comes to regrowth or even length. The more one can carry in their arsenal, the better!

Wow, so Lavender oil in jojoba at 5% was nearly the same as minoxidil at 4 weeks without the lymph reaction of enlargement of the spleen. Guess I will be ordering some jojoba, as I already have lavender EO. I won't be oiling my hair 5 times a week like in the study, but it seems to say 20 applications and the hair grew 95%!

Yes! And I have noticed a big difference. I have also used Rogaine in the past on spots. I am going back to the lavender oil mixture in a roller bottle when I feel an urge to pull.

I will update this thread just for experimental and entertainment purposes in a few months with my results. My hair seems to be very different from yours as it is thick in hair diameter and density and quite poofy (which I was in my 40s before I realized that meant wavy!). I'm guessing that my hair grows at a normal rate naturally so I don't really have a control group. I measured my bangs and took pics 2 days ago to compare for "proof".

(Sorry for the thread jack @Mrs_Strizzle !)

I didn't know what was wrong with me until I turned 36 and got the internet. I couldn't believe there was a name for this weird thing I was suffering with! And finding others who had the same behavior! It was life changing.
I finally was able to read as much as I could and educate myself. From that point on I have become much more aware of my triggers (watching TV, talking on the phone).
I was finally was able to get a real haircut!
I still have my moments, but I'm much better now. The bald spots are gone. I still cheer when I look at the top of my head these days!
But I still try really hard to keep on track.
How many times I swore to myself I would stop! Hundreds, no doubt. It seems that education and self awareness was the answer!
I'm glad to hear you have had improvement over the years too, and maybe the hair oil is really working for you!

Both, though my hair still gets plenty frizzy, especially living in FL! I let it do its thing, its not too bad as I don't wear it out too often. Certainly there are oils that work best for the scalp (jojoba oil, and some thats amazing for hair (or both) Argan, the real stuff.

The curlier the hair, the more dry it is, the more fragile it is as well. I have cottony hair with curls the size of a drinking straw. my hair is much more prone to dryness because of its curl pattern than straighter hair.

What you have to learn is what seals in moisture and what repels moisture. For instance after condition my hair, I use olive and argan oil...and I use a lot... to seal my strands after its been conditioned. And even though I will rinse my scalp after a workout, I don't typically reapply oils that day unless my hair needs it. (I usually apply oils 2 days a week in summer, maybe 3 days in winter) . I use jojoba oil on my scalp as its closest to your scalp oil anyway.

I grew up using different things though...but thats another story for another day.

If I want sleeker looks, I will use silicone as a final step and only drops of it. Like literal drops. (no need for a lot)

I don't use coconut oil as for me that clogs my pores though some people swear by it. I also don't use olive oil on my scalp but can use it on the strands.

When I wash my hair at the end of the week, I wash 2 times. 1 with a clarifyer, (I use Kenra Clarifying) the other wash is a moisturizing shampoo (Avanti Silicone Mix).

I do it because while the clarifier removes all the oil residue which is a good thing because you don't want a ton of build up, the downside is also makes my scalp and hair super dry. the 2nd wash with moisturizing poo adds back some moisture to the hair. and the deep conditioner (also silicon mix, and I leave it on an hour before rinsing with cool water) allows my bone dry hair to be able to stretch without breakage.

After I rinse my hair for the final time, I use a knit towel. I absolutely NEVER rub the hair together or on the towel, recipe for disaster on curly hair like mine because it will just knot up. I just blot the excess water.

Then I add handfuls of oil.

lol I know that sounds crazy but it works and I've never had a problem.

Then I take a big giant comb and comb it through tip to root (never the other way around) then take a finer tooth comb and run that through.

Its after that that I'll put in braids or a bun, whatever I may be feeling at the time. But I let it dry this way. I never let it dry loose because it becomes a big ol puff ball and hard to handle. I also never ever comb or brush my hair dry unless I've done a blow out. I won't use a hair dryer unless I'm planning on doing a blow out (which is rare these days)

You're on a journey of learning with your hair. it will take different things for you and you have to learn what your hair and scalp likes. I will say that it does not have to be expensive. My main squeeze hair products are under 20 dollars for the giant tubs...lol

Quick update about this. I've been oiling my scalp and massaging it with a shampoo brush about 3 times a week before shampooing. I took the first pic in the white shirt Aug 14, blue shirt Sept 15. It measures just a TINY bit over an inch. I have no idea how much my hair would have grown in a normal month, but I am happy with it. (Excuse the ugly quarantine bleach that I'm slowly cutting off without doing a major chop. Also it looks like a mess because this is me trying to straighten my waves without heat to get an accurate measurement.)20220915_083135.jpg

That is quite a bit of growth!!!!!

@ilovegemstones I thought that too. We will see if it continues. The real test we are doing on hubby to see if it regrows hair on the back of his head. We haven't been doing it long but I did take before pics too, so we will see.

I take hair, skin and nails vitamins and my hair grows so fast I can’t keep up. I’m 63 with no gray yet. I just had 4 inches chopped off. I thought castor oil was the big thing for hair growth?

Yes, I've heard castor oil too. It is so thick and I've struggled to get it out of my hair with sulphate free shampoo I use. I also believe it made my scalp break out, but lots of things do because of my pcos. My friend from India once told me her grandma used sesame oil for everything so I tried it. My hair loves it so much, if just soaks it up. I have tried sweet almond, jojoba, and coconut. My hair prefers the sesame.

How awesome about your no gray and rapid growth! I've heard premature gray can be caused by a copper deficiency or maybe it's great genes. I inherited my father's dark wavy hair. He is now completely silver and it is gorgeous. My hubby and his friends are very jealous, lol. So I decided to stop dying my hair to cover them up hoping one day mine looks just like his. They are mostly growing in a stripe above my left eye now. I'm digging it!

Good genes to be sure. Only good genes in my entire body but I will take them! Where do you get good sesame oil and how do you use it?
