Okay, my husband decided after trying an eliptical machine for 10 minutes that he wants to get one. He's snowboarded for a number of years (15+) and still goes up, but he is looking for another way to keep in shape.

I am hoping to use it too, but will only be using it about one time a week as I'm addicted to step aerobics. . .

Anyone have any recommendations? The consumer report's best-buy one is about $1000 (the Schwinn 418) and immediatetly my husband said we'd just go with that one. Before I looked up the info, we were thinking more in the $800 range, but the only one under $1000 CR reviewed got terrible reviews. (the ones with great reviews were WAY too much - $2K+)

I'm kind of unsure about spending a lot of $ on exercise equipment especially since my DH has NEVER been into indoor sports and there is no guarantee he will use the machine after a few months. I tried to talk him into getting a used machine, but then he said that we would have to get me used diamonds too

we don''t have one but i''ve thought about it some. My SIL has a really nice one and she says she just uses it in spirts. She used it for a few months and then it became a clothes drying rack. then a few months later she''d use it again and then it would go unused. she''s too afraid to sell it b/c she knows as soon as she does she''ll wish she had it but they are much more dedicated when the make the effort to get to the gym. If it were us, I''d get a used one to test for a while and see if we would really stay consistant and use it. if we did, then it would be worth it to invest in a really nice home model. I bet you could find some really nice unused second hand models too though.

and what''s wrong with a second hand diamond??

I''ve had mine for a year and a half and use it anywhere from 2-5 times a week. I spent about $400 and it serves its purpose, I can adjust incline, track minutes exercised and calories burned (plus I have a lame little fan). I''d buy it all over again, even though it doesn''t have any bells and whistles because all I wanted was a way to exercise in my home, not the hi-tech panel, etc.

Which one do you have? Thanks.

I have a Pro-form Stride Select 825. I got it on sale from a local sporting goods store. Keep your eye out for good bargains, I''d avoid stores that only sell treadmills/ellipticals etc.

I have a Pro-Form elliptical that I bought a couple of months ago from Sears for just under $600 - I completely forgot the model number and since I''m at work right now, I can''t go check - sorry

But we LOVE this machine! Perfect for us and we feel that it is "gym quality"

I''d go to a store that sells ellipticals and try out several of them - we tried out many before and some that we tried felt awkward for us. Our Pro-Form fits us perfectly! Good luck!

I have an old Pro-Form (no idea of the model) that I bought at a yard sale because there is no way our budget could swing a high-tech machine. I love it because I have back problems that running outside and running on a treadmill cause, and even though I got this thing cheap it still allows me to work out without the impact.
