I talked to him a little about it today and he said we''d talk about it, and I emailed a place today to see if we could visit. He said he wants to make sure we get what will work for us-having kids, cats, Chicken etc.

Elrohwen-thanks for the link to that rescue-I spent quite a bit of time this afternoon looking at all the dogs! I''m very much in favor of rescue dogs!

I did find a site today that has Irish JRT''s, and it said they''re specifically bred to not be crazy like a typical JRT. They''re short legged, so I don''t know if that means all short legged ones are this kind, or if this is completely different. They''re clear out in New York or someplace tho, so way too far.

Yeah, I'm a little...hesitant I guess. Husband really really wants one, and I'm still just unsure. I think we need to find someone who has one and visit with the kids and see how it goes maybe. I'm worried it will be like having a really loud kid w/ADHD and OCD or something.

Might have to research smaller dogs a little more too-maybe a different small breed would be better for us.

packrat, if you get a puppy (which I believe is the best way to go because they bond completely to you from such an early age that they don't remember anything else), your puppy will pick up the tone and temperament of your home. At our house, it's just me and my husband and my older dog. We don't have a loud house and I have always been very loving with my dogs. I treat them almost as I would a kid. Both of my dogs grew to have a similar demeanor, even though they're completely different breeds. A dog will be conditioned over time to behave the way you want him to behave and they will pick up on your personality traits. My dog has never had any problems with other dogs, grown ups or kids.

This is my Bella. She is the sweetest lovebug and she doesn't have any troublesome or annoying traits. She's an affection hound and is all about kisses and cuddling.

Bella and her big sister Cassie. They sometimes nap together like a pea inside a pod.

Thanks Gemgirl! Your doggies are very cute! (One of my cats is a Bella!)

I found a 13 week old not too far from here and super cute. They emailed last night and said we can come see her anytime. JD mentioned looking into the short legged ones too. I''m at work, so don''t have a pic, but she''s a cutie. JD does want to wait until later this summer/fall, but I really just want to see and play w/ a puppy and adult so I can see how big they are, they''re temperment etc. So, I doubt we''d get this one right now. Fun to look tho.

Oh it''s SO much fun to look for a new pup. It''s just so hard for me to not fall in love! When we went shopping, I was looking for a smooth haired Jack. They come in wire haired too. It''s a matter of personal preference. Bella is the long legged variety as opposed to the short, and you have a choice of a few different ear types too. Bella''s are the standard V-flap, but some Jacks have ears that stand straight up! They look constantly surprised. LOL!

The most important part of when to buy a dog is- is your family ready to welcome a furbaby (her crate, toys and everything else) into the house, and realize that you''ll be on a strict housebreaking schedule if you do bring home a puppy. (Bella was fourteen weeks) I made the mistake of buying a Christmas puppy, not realizing that I''d be the one outside in the snow every hour and a half to two hours trying to coax her to pee! She was only 7 lbs as a pup and her little feet turned the color of raspberries from standing in the snow for just two minutes. I felt so bad for her.

Happy shopping! I wish I could manage a third. I''d love to have another.

Ohh I hear ya on trying to housebreak in the winter! When we got Chicken it was late fall and it was generally me outside with her..sucked setting my alarm to take her out in the middle of the night too.

We like the smooth coat and flappy ears. I guess it doesn''t really matter if it''s a short or long legger. Female and cute are my requirements.

This is the puppy I found near us. The email they sent said her price is totally negotiable. I think she was 10 weeks in the pictures, and is 13 wks now. JD still wants to wait, and I think he thinks if we go see the puppy and the parents I''ll be nutso and want to take her home. We do have a lot on our plates right now, so I think adding a puppy would be too overwhelming-but I''d like to have some interaction w/the breed before we get one and I think this is the perfect way. They won''t be breeding the mom again until next summer.

OMG..what a precious face! I see TROUBLE written all over it! LOL!!

I know it! She''s a stocky lil thing. I wonder if maybe JD''s worried *he* might fall in love w/her and want to take her home and that''s why he doesn''t really want to visit the family!

packrat, what an angel baby!! Go get her! Is she a pure bred with papers? and what are they asking for her?

I know it''s sometimes very hard to walk away. She''s got a little face I couldn''t walk away from.

What a cutie pie! I have this feeling that if you go and visit, you''re going to walk out with that adorable girl!

She is soooo adorable!!! That''s how they get you! They dig up your garden, you''re about to be furious, and then you see that sweet little face...

She is verrry cute!!

My aunt breeds Jack Russells (if you ever want to come to FL for one). Yes they are high energy. Yes they are smart. Yes they can be stubborn. Yes they are trainable. Yes they adore their people. Yes they are fantastic with kids. Yes they bounce off walls. But they are amazing family dogs, they love to sit in laps, love on you, be cuddled, they love children, they are good watch dogs (though not big enough to make a difference they do alert you). I tend to favor the wire haired but that''s because I love long haired non shedding dogs hehe.

wow.... I just had a really interesting thought.

OMG she's cute! But STAY STRONG and wait. You said you have a lot on your plate right now. All puppies are cute. Definitely set up visits. Maybe waiting until next year for another litter might be perfect timing for you? I also checked through the rescues someone listed, and there are so many likely candidates there too. I think what you need to look for to suit your needs is a dog with the right temperament for you. More calm and loving? Our terrier, though she was a very adorable puppy, never became a loving affectionate adult. She's all business (hunting instinct is very strong). She's beautiful but aloof. I prefer cuddly. Anyway, good luck!

ETA: remember it is the *adult* dog you must love. Everyone loves puppies.

Her price was down to $300, and negotiable. I asked about seeing her and the parents this weekend and JD said no, he wants to wait until August so we''re closer to the point of getting one. He feels that since we have no intention of buying that puppy, going to see her and the parents will be a waste of the owners time, and he doesn''t want to be put on the spot to buy her when we''re not ready.

Tho really, for that face, I''d just make myself ready!

There''s a breeder out in Nebraska that I corresponded with last fall/winter (one of their males is the dad to this puppy I found) and they''re super nice and will be having a litter born in August, but they will be about twice or more, than this puppy.

Just have to wait and see I guess. The breeder in Nebraska isn''t too too far away, and they talked last year about bringing the dogs down to hunt w/JD and one of our friends, (but we just got crazy busy) and so we could get to know the breed a little bit..wouldn''t hurt to contact them again and see if we could work something out.

packrat - she is really really cute. But decide what is best for both of you.

My thought was, SO and I are moving into a townhouse in the fall... and my little girl needs a companion. My cousin breeds Jack Russell doggies. I don''t know why I never thought of that!!! We''re going to talk to her here coming up about it.

Dragonfly, that''s a nice idea, to talk to your cousin about getting one from her-she''ll prolly give you a good deal! Remember to post pictures-puppy pictures are so fun!
