I am seeing that I like antique looking rings with the sidestones / beadset stones/ baguette etc. but also like the look of a solitaire / diamond shank......is anyone else experiencing this? It's a bigger look with the side stuff going on but the center stone might get lost and no longer be the focus. Instead it will be one blingy finger coverage ring.....or do i want a classy solitaire that shows the diamond but might not give as much finger coverage?????????

Yup. Had the exact same issue.

For me, more simple is perfect for my engagement ring. More detailed designs are better for a RHR. But that's a personal choice.

I have seen many people change over to simple solitaires over the years, from more complicated designs for their engagement rings. But I've also seen the reverse.

Can you take some time on the setting. I wore my temp setting for 4 years, and I'm so glad I had that opportunity.

Have you tried on a variety of designs? I know that sometimes what pleases my eye as a piece of jewelry doesn't necessarily look good on me. And, while I love the look of white gold on other people, it simply doesn't look good on me.

It's important to choose something you love that also fits your style.

A simple solitaire will likely never go out of style. If you want/hope to keep and wear your ring forever, something more classic will likely work better.

Lotus has a great point. There are MANY MANY designs I love, but quite a few of them look terrible on my fingers. You really need to try things on and see what looks right on you in person, first. Then once you have it narrowed down to styles that look nice on your hands, then you go ahead and narrow things down further.

Have you tried on anything like the first design? That's where I'd start. And I'd also try to find something like the second to try on as well.

Also, have you considered a pave split shank? That's a design I think would look nice and give you coverage, something different without being over the top.

Something like this:

This is my favorite, personally:

Hahaha, I've been undecided about settings for years! It's so hard to make a decision. There are just too many options. So needless to say, I can relate. I think ultimately, I gravitate to a classic solitaire for a larger stone, and a halo for a smaller.

I have never owned an expensive setting. I have owned... ohhh... one billion different diamonds but all of them were set in "temporary" white gold mounts, the least expensive ones I could lay hands on. Why? Because I am the most indecisive person about mounts and I loathe the idea of wasted money on a setting that I could only sell for scrap if I changed my mind. So I have chugged along with mounts that don't make my heart sing because I am cheap and indecisive. So yes, I am always undecided about settings.

That may be changing though :Up_to_something: I have a little something in the works.

Thanks for the messages and Gypsy - thanks for the links! I really love the first one alot. I have been liking split shanks alot lately.
I have tried on one similar to the natalie k, and it was pretty but wasn't sure if it was too much. The first one, didn't try on yet, but tried something similar (have pic, but too big, have to resize) and I liked it - it seemed like the diamond would be more emphasized if it was lifted up more. Right now it's pretty low.

The only thing I think about is would it turn people off If i ever sell the diamond , that it is separate from the original setting?? Or would I have it reset in the original, then sell it???? What do u think?

Never factor in settings in resale. They are largely irrelevant unless they are really something totally special and unique and amazing or branded. Resale depends on the stone. So if you are resetting do it only for yourself. You will either be reselling a loose stone and selling the setting separate (which is what I recommend if you go with the gigantic sidestones halo setting or a brand name like Vatche) or you will be selling the stone for what it's worth and throwing in the setting for free (current setting for example). Settings are for YOU. If you are talking about a new setting, you will never recoup what you put in and it's an exercise in frustration to even try.

Yeah I mean the original setting. I guess I'd either consign it somewhere? Sell as one piece? ? Or use it to trade in ??

You know what's funny? I don't like round stones and sometimes mine doesn't because the facets are large and on the edges, sometimes makes it look less round , esp from angles.

I'd sell it on DB. I adore your setting. If you had offered it for sale when I had my OEC I would have bought it from you so fast you'd still be spinning.

Fits a 7mm stone, eh? (still plotting to see if I can own it).

My taste in settings changed pretty quickly after DH and I were engaged.

We were engaged with a very modern ring--a platinum shared prong eternity band with a modern cushion.
I loved the bling, but quickly realized that it was too modern for me.
My upgrade is a rose gold solitaire with an antique cushion and a bit of detail under the stone.

The thing is, you just never know where your taste may lead. I think it's good to purchase a setting that you love right now, with the understanding that your preferences may change with time, and that is OKAY. In fact, it's a wonderful excuse for a new ring project!

I tried on a lot of settings before we were engaged. I think I got caught up in the bling factor, and forgot about my own real style in the process. Now I look at my rose gold ring all the time and think about how perfectly it goes with the rest of what I choose to wear. I loved the platinum setting, but it just wasn't *me*.

threadjack to say-- oooo!

Thats intersting Haven. Great perspective. Gypsy- what's db?? :twirl:

diamondbistro.com it's where PSers list their stuff for sale. I wouldn't consign unless you can't sell it yourself. And I really think you can sell it yourself.

wow thanks! I never heard of that place b4. I love the uniqueness of my stone but love vintage /new cushions.....

I happen to have that H Levi setting in plain 18k white gold (no pave). It really is a pretty setting and does set the stone up higher.

Is your diamond a modern round brilliant or is it an old cut? If a modern rb, then I think you can choose anything you like. But if it is an old cut, I like it in the original setting or another antique reproduction.

You know. I adore your ring. If you can sell it straight out-- stone and setting for a good price, would you? It sounds like you'd prefer a cushion, if you had a choice.

Have you had your ring appraised? If not and you would consider selling it... I am POSITIVE you can get a great price for it on Diamond Bistro with a solid appraisal from a good independent appraiser.

I agree with Gypsy and absolutely would not recommend buying a new setting if you even have the idea of maybe selling the diamond. Take this from one who has wasted money on a couple of settings thus far. They are just to expensive now to buy for short term use, in my opinion.

Thanks so much for the compliments! THe appraiser loved the stone and said it was very rare to find a trans. cut this color (G) that was that brillliant.
I do love the stone but never really cared for the setting. Iti's very clean, only a tiny feather or 2 near the prongs. It sparkles like crazy in low lighting and in the sunlight it's on fire.

I figured I can't give up on it until I wear it in a new setting as planned since I bought it, you know?? I remember looking at the setting and saying, this is temporary. But I grew fond of the solitaire look. I figured the royal charm is pretty and a little thicker. I LOVe the profile of that ring. Do you have pics of your setting? I'd love to see profiles etc.!!!

It is a transitional cut and it's kind of weird to me to set it in a modern setting, I know. The only repro setting I like are the 3 stone ones (see link at top post) or the one Gypsy found - it's a split shank and still simple and still shows the center stone. Plus the royal charm (levi). Which one would you pick????

Thanks! I can't wait to get out there and try some settings on. Been under the weather lately!
