Dishwashers...

are noisy
can leak
can break
use electricity
end up in landfills
use nasty chemicals
leave spots - unless you add more nasty chemicals
can't clean nasty burns on pots
take up valuable kitchen space
need to be loaded and unloaded

I still see people rinsing dishes first even though they say you don't have to.
I still think I can wash dishes using less water if I'm careful, plus I'm done in less time than it takes to rinse dishes, load and unload them.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on the planet who does not like them.

Nope, you''re not. I don''t get them. If people have to rinse to put them in, it doesn''t take much longer to handwash. Using a sink filled with a bit of hot soapy water (and depending on how skittish you are about suds, using another sink of hot water to rinse) really saves water.

We do things the old fashioned way...wash by hand and TGuy will often dry (although I don''t mind drip/air drying). We have a dishwasher in our rental home and I use it for storage. It kind of skeeves me out.

I love the dish washer! I''ve done the hand wash thing and it''s not so bad with one person, but I don''t like doing it for two. I find the dishes pile up over the day (nobody wants to wash their breakfast dishes before work, etc) and then they get smelly by the end of the day. I''d rather do a 2 second rinse and throw them in the dishwasher for later (I don''t even rinse if there isn''t a ton of stuff on the plates).

I''ve also been told numerous times that dishwashers use less water than hand washing and are therefore safer for the environment.

Not me.

We have 2 in our new kitchen

We don''t use ours right now unless we''ve been chopping raw meat. We''re in an apt. and we don''t pay for water but we do pay electicity so it just makes more sense.

I hate washing dishes. Dishwasher for the win!

I never thought much about dishwashers until I didn''t have one anymore. And being the only person in my apartment who DOES the dishes (I''m not bitter. I swear. DH just does a reeeeally lousy job.), I MISS HAVING A DISHWASHER SO MUCH.

(speaking of which, I don''t understand how we go through as many glasses as we do. I once didn''t wash the glasses in my apartment for 2 days, and I swear, we had 14 dirty glasses. FOURTEEN. BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE. HOW AND WHY?!?!)

DH used to get out a new glass for almost every drink he had. It was getting ridiculous. Now I make him use the same water glass the entire day and only get new glasses if he wants to have a different type of drink in it.

I do that too.
Probably good for the immune system too.

I don''t hate dishwashers in general, but I really hate the one in our apartment. It''s a cheap model and does a lousy job. We still use it for some things, but none of our pots and pans or sharp knives can go in the dishwasher anyway so I also do a lot of handwashing.

And Alli, I sympathize...I know EXACTLY how you feel.

DH just drinks a lot of different drinks. He''ll easily have 4 different drinks within 2 hours of one another--whiskey/bourbon when he gets home, water & soda with dinner, white russian for dessert. ::sigh::

I guess I''m not much better, though I don''t drink soda. I''ll have tea, water, wine, and sometimes he''ll convince me to have a white russian too (GAH they are so good! The Big Lebowski ruined me.)

We wash after every meal. Easier to do since I work from home. Even when we have company over, I wash as I prepare/cook, so at the end of the night, we only have a few plates to do.

DH will do this too. He''ll use the same water glass, but then he''ll also have juice, or iced tea or something. And if he has two beers he''ll often get another frosted glass out of the freezer for the second one

We lived without a dishwasher for ~4 years. Never again. The dishwasher gives us an extra ~20-30 minutes of relaxation time a night.

I never had one until I bought my own place. It took me a year to work up the nerve to run it. I was terrified it was going to leak.

But now, I think it''s the best thing ever, especially ever after parties!

I have gone from no dishwasher, to dishwasher, to no dishwasher, to dishwasher, to no dishwasher...to dishwasher. All depended on where I lived at the time.

I much prefer the dishwasher. Hands down. Mine is quiet (even sort of soothing when we put it on before bed...I have read it is great to put the quieter ones on at night for babies!), I never have to rinse dishes beforehand and it works wonderfully. And saves me a lot of time. Loading is done as I use dishes over the day or two so I don''t even consider that taking time (rather than letting them pile up), unloading takes less than 5 minutes. DH and I do that fairly equally too. And no dishpan hands!

There is a lot of other things I''d rather do with my time instead of stand at the sink washing dishes. Sure there are times if I wash dishes with DH or someone else it can be sort of fun and time to talk...but we can take the time to talk while the dishwasher is running! DH has, like me, lived with one off and on...and much, much prefers it. There are times we seriously sit down, look towards the dishwasher, and one of us exclaims "I sure like having that dishwasher!".

I agree with all the negatives already listed especially the fact that i think i do a better job than it can. However, it is another "cannot live without" time saving machine. Also I think I would have divorced my husband by now on account of the fact he never washes up and the amount of cups, plates, glasses and pots he uses on a daily basis!

In true moroccan style he mentally thinks he is cooking for one, but in actual fact always cooks for many more. So he starts of with a small pot and slowly progresses through to the largest one that we own (its is huge) on account that he underestimated the size of the dish he is making! lol

You can apply most of that to most kitchen appliances. Many people don''t like them for the reasons you give, but each to their own. My own take on them is as follows:
9.gif

Noisy - it''s washing up for me, who cares?
3.gif
Plus, our kitchen is at the far end of the house (it''s a bit of an odd rambling house) and we don''t sit in the kitchen, so it doesn''t matter.

Leak and break - they can, but it hasn''t so far (ten years old) and regular maintenance helps. Our model uses very little water, so even if it does leak, it isn''t going to be a complete disaster. Plus, it''s going to leak onto a sealed stone floor, so I can always mop it up.

Use electricity - ok, but I can live with that, it''s washing up for me (see noisy, above).

Ends up in landfill - yes. That is an issue and my only way of minimising my impact here is to use it for as long as humanly possible, and have it repaired if it breaks down, look after it as best I can and try to extend its life as far as possible. I don''t see any reason why we wouldn''t get another ten years at least out of it. It''s a robust, good quality machine and it''s taken care of. If I have to replace it, our Local Authority will dispose of it on their waste care scheme, to minimise harm.

Use nasty chemicals- you can buy ecologically friendly dishwasher tablets from our local shop.

Can''t clean burns on pots - no, but then neither can I.
2.gif
Best way to get stubborn stains off a casserole dish? Make a casserole in it and give it to someone...

Takes up valuable kitchen space - that would be a consideration in a small kitchen. Ours is the size of a barn (and about as draughty) so not a consideration. Also see noisy (above).

Need to be loaded and unloaded - still less effort (to me) than washing dishes. My homes without a dishwasher looked like where crockery goes to die. Loading it gets done as we go along. Unloading it gets done by DH.

Rinsing - why?! I might scrape off the bigger lumps.

Using more water -possibly. I can be careful with water use in other areas and I''m fortunate enough to live in an area where it is much less of an issue than in many places. I still avoid wasteful use, because it''s a precious resource, but it isn''t a huge problem here. At the moment.

All things considered, I''m happy with my dishwasher, but I understand why you might not care for them.

Count my husband and us too (we thought we were the only ones!) I have heard handwashing uses more water, but what if you have a basin of hot soapy water the dishes are soaking in, and only use water to rinse? We have room in our kitchen to have a dishwasher but never put one in. My mom has a dishwasher but only uses it at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

You mean a caucasian? LOL

I love our new one. It''s so incredibly quiet we both checked the first few times we used it to make sure it was actually running. I only use it twice a week instead of every other day or every 2 days b/c of how the new one is laid out I can get more stuff in it. I do still have to do some things by hand but not as much. I don''t pre rinse. I scrape off the globs and that''s it. My mom rinses, and uses a rag to wipe it off and I think dude, put some soap on it and you''d be done-why bother?

YES! And if, when I take a sip, I don''t say, "That''s a hell of a caucasian, Jackie!" he almost gets offended, hahahaha!

In general I like them. When they work properly. I use the saving energy settings..

But the Bosch we have in Nantucket?? Have complained about this before, yes super quiet, energy efficient etc... But you open it up and everything is wet.... Like what''s the point if I have to hand dry all the glasses???
11.gif

The racks are cheap, they snap together, and fall apart.. Hate that.

The one in FLA my husband picked, without me being there... Works fine but is so loud the next town over could here it.... So only run it when we go out. Our Tenants haven''t complained about it, which is funny. Because they mention every little thing to us..

I''ve had one and not had one all my life, dishwashers sure do make entertaining easier! I like it (but I NEVER rinse). It saves us a lot of time, but I cna totally live without if necessary. My family uses appliances and cars as long as possible, so that helps to mitigate the environmental guilt, not totally but some.

DH hates that I reuse my water glass all day, but he also doesn''t understand why we recycle
20.gif
He''s about 20 years behind in being environmentally conscious--it''s a complete non-issue in day to day life in his family and where he grew up...but we''re working on it
2.gif

I could not live without our dishwasher. When we moved into our house there wasn''t one in it. We lasted two weeks before we had to buy one. I could live without many things but not that.

I love my dishwasher! It''s quiet it''s energy effcient, it does the job without rinsing first, and it''s a newer model kitchenaid (am I allowed to plug brands?)

Anyway, I''m just glad we have one because I hate doind dishes and so does dh. Funny thing, he likes loading, and I like to unload (because I know where everything goes in the kitchen) so it workds really well for us.

me! our dishwasher is a 24 yrs old virgin. we always wash our dishes by hand.
