JVC as in Jeweler''s Vigilance Committee. I''ve seen a ''JVC certified'' or something like that, label on a few retailer websites. Anyone know anything about them?

JVC is well known in the trade.

from http://www.jvclegal.org/

"Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) is a not-for-profit trade association whose mission is to maintain the jewelry industry's highest ethical standards. Since we opened our doors in 1912, we have served as a resource for both trade and consumers.

To the trade, JVC offers compliance expertise, precious metals testing, arbitration/mediation services and legal handbooks for various industry segments, among many other services. For consumers, JVC serves as a information bank, answering questions or inquiries about the industry or jewelry in general. For both, JVC mediates legal complaints, saving all parties costly legal fees and negative publicity associated with public court cases."

Cool, I was just curious. Yeah, I went to the website, but I was wanting to get some opinions on them. Nowadays any company or anyone for that matter can put together a pretty decent looking website.

It is a rather small organization which many members of the trade support with annual dues. Sometimes JVC does take action against a member of the trade who is publishing false data in advertising or doing some other trickery that JVC might seek to control. Its a difficult job.

In truth, the marketing and selling of gems and jewelry is pretty much unregulated. The ethical standards of JVC are worthy enough, but many firms don''t uphold them.

Not sure I understand you exactly oldminer. Do you mean that JVC''s standards are worthy, but that not all jeweler''s choose to join because of this? Or, do you mean that the standards are worthy, but not all members choose to honor them and that JVC doesn''t always have the manpower to back this up? If the former, no big deal. That''s why there are organizations like this. However, if the latter, that''s not so good. That would greatly compromise the integrity of what JVC is trying to do.

JVC has both good and rather poor members, in terms of "etical practices". THere is a majority of good people and always a few not so good ones. It is a good organization that is not powerful enough to change the industry. Its a good organization and somewhat underpowered.

A Certified Member. I suppose that means they swear to live up to the JVC code of conduct. I don''t believe it has any higher meaning. My firm is a member of JVC and has been for many years. Being Certified by them is not ringing a lot of bells. It sounds good and probably means nothing but good things.

Make sure you inquire as to return policy and refund policies. Make sure you see it in written form or on their website. Most firms are looking to make friends and new customers. Only a small minority of real businesses are out to hurt anyone. Fly-by-night individual sellers are much greater a problem, just like being an impulsive buyer creates its own set of problems.

I really appreciate your advice. Thank you!
