Hello, I am looking at getting an engagement ring in the next few weeks and have been doing some research. I live in Canada, and let''s just say around where I live retail prices would make you sick to your stomach...

I want to get the most for my money, but don''t want to get ripped off or end up with a piece of junk. I am interested in this ring:

http://store.yahoo.com/marsh-net/ce1ctdisoriv2.html

Beside having a terrible website, they seem to have pretty good customer service and they have a 4500+ feedback on ebay. Having said that, the majority of their items seem to be under $20 and they do have like 300 negative feedbacks or something...

Can anybody give any comments on them? Any suggestions of alternatives or does anybody live local to them? Any help would be great!

Thanks
Matt

Beyond those 300 naught, just imagine how many didn't bother to answer for fear of getting slandered themselves. Why bother?

If the guys didn't get their record for selling items like the one you want - maybe the florist has diamonds? Gee... I am sure that whatever you want to spend on that ring is better spent elsewhere - even elsewhere on Ebay!

There are plenty of diamonds with shoddy certs and doubtful look - if you would put up with one anyway, why not at least know what you are paying for. I could not say that much about the item at the end of that link. All I see is a report from an institution few if any would hold in as high regard as one of the two or three widely recognized gem labs. There is a price for everything, and some things are never worth any money at all...

Sorry for the harsh words...

Now seeing what you want, what is your price range? Maybe we can help you find a great online vendor who has excellent customer service and quality items you can look at?

If you haven't already, please try plugging in your wishes into the PriceScope search engine and you should see what there is and what's the price ranges... Sometime you get what you pay for, and if it's TOO cheap, maybe it's not what they advertise...

Ana's right...I learned my lesson on E-Bay, and I left no feedback at times, afraid to get negative feedback in return!

Wow, that was quick... This is why I am researching a bit more, I have read through a lot of their feedback and even the negative ones look like misunderstandings. They are a jewelery store, but searching through 4000+ listings to find a similar ring is a lengthy process in itself...

So the next question is, does anybody know where I can find a brilliant round, white gold or platinum, around 1ct, with H or better color for around $1200 to $1500USD? Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't mean to sound like a cheapskate but I have student loans, car payments, and a girlfriend who wants a really nice ring...lol.

PS The website I mentioned will allow me to return it for a $50 restocking fee, but I don't want to go through the hassle if it is a waste of time.

Now... the better part is the appraisal value on that post. If those grades on the stones woudl be right, the whole thing would come at about 2k. To see "appraisal value" or "recommended retail" or what not at twice the listed price is somewhat to widespread to mind anymore, but this is a bit much!

Not sure what to say - just RUN!

I am not sure that you are not asking for something 'too good to be true' but I would also not pay $50 to see that stone. It simply is way far into the no-go zone.

Well the main thing is I am looking for other suggestions if nobody has had any direct experience with this company. I am not looking for "too good to be true", I am looking for "most bang for my buck", so to speak...

Again, being in Canada really limits my possibilities of actually seeing the ring before purchasing...

From these posts you might guess that few wuld have taken a second look at that... let alone go and 'experience' the $50 loss. However, did you try to contact one of the buyers of Marshnet who got something at least as expensive as the ring you are looking at?

Mara did buy a ring on Ebay - you may want to read her comments... Basically, the message is "get it, but set your expectations really, really much lower than the advertised specs". In this case, I see an industrial-quality (barely transparent from the white inclusions inside) diamond, in a nicely 'bleached' picture. It is already hard to picture diamond color grades online, but the repscetive photo is paper white.

However, everyone has a different definitions for the respective "bang" ($ are standard though

: if all you want is a 1/5 gram of carbon not very trasparent, faceted and somewhat polished... this is it. No idea for what prices the respective stones sell for industrial applications, but as jewelry material such stones would barely have a price - they are hard to sell for all their 'beauty'.

Enough is enough... I suppose.

Part of what this original poster has to decide is what sort of cut he wants to keep. If he wants mediocre, there are tons of diamonds that can fit his bill, but they won't be great. But if he wants something better...AGS0 and/or non-branded H&A or AGS1 or 2 with excellent IS..that is doable...in a slightly smaller size.

Nic...the 2nd stone you posted is not even close to what a .90c should be in diameter. That tells me the cut is going to be very off.

I think I1s can be GREAT bargain if you find a very nice one but I will throw in here that 9 out of 10 will not be eye-clean. Have the patience to find that ONE that is? Excellent, it's a GREAT deal. Good luck!

I do suggest checking out consignment stores where you can at least SEE them before buying. Check your yellow pages and see what's near you.

Also, go to your local jeweler, give them your color and clarity specs and see what the stones will look like in that range (even if the size or carat weight isn't the same)

Then, you can do some online looking, but I would suggest buying on E-Bay ONLY if it seems like the person has good feedback and it was a relationship that went sour, or if there is a GIA, AGS or possibly an EGL certification, as those are closer in color and clarity.

Warning: EGL is a bit looser, but can be a good deal, as the color may be a bit lower as calrity may as well...

Good luck and have you considered that the stone can always be upgraded later on when you don't have such financial restrictions, or have saved up (if she REALLY wants a 1ct)?

We waited to save for ours, as HE wanted a substantial ring AND good quality, so we delayed and saved...Some people get whatever they can afford, and then use the company's upgrade policy to get a better stone if they so chose later on...Just a thought. Good luck!!!
