any really notable difference in color jump? Lets say from G to F ?

I saved this because I thought it was an excellent example of color differences in rounds. Keep in mind, once mounted in a setting, it''s hard to tell a true color grade. My friend has an IGI ''G'' color (no cut grade but the polish and sym is good/good) and against my AGS000Ideal ''J'' and there was no difference in color.

I don''t think so...that''s why I bought an I color princess. And I was recently validated when I compared it to my future SIL''s nicely cut but not ideal F color princess, and I swear I couldn''t tell the difference. Princesses supposedly show color MORE than rounds, so the difference would be even less pronounced with rounds, if that''s what you''re going for.

Personally, I think the different would be pretty small to most. I''ve got an AGS H and it was appraised as a G... if it''s well cut it''s going to face up very white.

If I''m in the right environment staring at diamonds I can see a 2-color jump in the lower color ranges (G and lower), but I can''t seem much of a differences in the D-F range at all.

nope, not to untrained eye.

Above 5 ct it is easy for most people to see.
below 1ct anyone who says they can tell in a setting out of the lab is fibbing

When I was looking at loose diamonds, I could generally tell the difference when going 2 steps. So, I could see a color difference from F to H, but not a whole lot from F to G.

H to I is easier than F to D - it is like a logarithmic scale

I couldn''t see the difference between an F to G in a 2ct or a G to an H. Believe me, I tried!. Lucky for me because I was able to get bigger for my budget because of it!

Oddly enough though, I can see the warmth i guess? from the side on my "I" color 5 stone and those are half carats.

All things being equal, you really shouldn''t notice a difference between a G and F.

Between two extremely well cut stones, it may be hard to tell an even larger difference!

I''ve always preferred a certain cut/color/clarity combination over carat weight, and between my G, VS1 (AGS0) earrings and D, VS1 (AGS0) engagement ring, I find that sometimes (depending on the lighting conditions) I''d be hard pressed to say there''s a noticeable difference (granted, the earrings are smaller so maybe they don''t show their color as much -- I do notice a tiny bit of "warmth" to the G stones, but it''s very, very, very slight).

If I put the earrings and ring side-by-side, I am convinced that the majority of people wouldn''t notice any difference at all! But I love the icy white sparkle of my engagement ring, and there is something about the mind-cleanness of the D color for me that makes it worth it. Otherwise, I''m not sure I would recommend anyone to go for an F over a G if they''re considering two extremely well cut stones designed to maximize light return.

To throw in my 2c, I bought an I color with a very good cut and do not regret it in the least. It is a great way to bump up the size a bit without really changing the stone''s appearance much. The color may be ever so slightly warmer, but I can''t tell the difference unless I hold an F or something right next to it. If you want a smaller stone and have a big budget, maybe it would be worth going for an icy color though. Depends on your viewpoint.

So true. Color is entirely a personal preference. You really need to look at a lot of stones in different ranges to figure out what your preference is, and where you see differences. But again, I don''t think you''ll see much of a difference from one step to another (F-G; G-H, H-I, etc.)

Had an interesting experience while looking at different diamonds with a friend. She noticed small variations in size -- she even picked up a 2 mm difference in 2 sidestones we were looking at! -- while I couldn''t discern much of a difference until I was looking at a 1.2 vs. a 1.5! Even then, the size just didn''t make a big difference to me in terms of the attractiveness of the stone. On the other hand, I was always drawn to the stones in the D-F range. So that''s my preference.

But you can''t go on what we say! If you''re deciding between an F and a G, the solution is to look at as many of them as you can find.
